I first heard this song when I watched the Irish top 40 countdown on TV. I remember seeing Milkshake by Kelis (which had spent like 5 weeks at #1) dethroned and being pissed. And then they played Toxic and everything about it was so good. The song itself is obviously amazing and the music video was just amazing. So I got over my rage at Milkshake's drop very, very quickly. My sister already stanned Britney so I knew her anyway but hearing Toxic began my Britney stanning. I still remember its chart run for the first 8 weeks somehow. It went like 1-1-1-1-2-2-2-6, being knocked off by Usher's 'Yeah' which really annoyed me. Best selling song of the year in Ireland though! Ah, memories.

It still remains her best song, it's been a bit killed by overplay but it is marvellous.

Definitely agree about the overplay. I still remember her performing on Blue Peter! Was the first time I heard it.

This was the song that got me into Britney! Loved it at the time and it's still one of my favourites now.

must... not... must... not... okay, I'm going to say it. I think this is one of her worst songs; I remember loving it at the time but it's just aged horribly for me. maybe the fact that it was overplayed was what did it, but I'm just not into it at all nowadays. I'm astounded that everyone's still heavily interested in it too. I much prefer 'everytime' in terms of the 'in the zone' singles.

It's overplayed and not really her best song ever, but it's a Britney classic.

Pretty low sales considering - 2004 was not good for mega sales. Prob my fave Britney track though!

I agree it was overplayed... but it is the staple pop song of the noughties.
I said it.
