The top 106 in full:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You voted for 105 songs, and here is the first place you'll get the results! This week I'll be counting down 105 - 51, followed by 50 - 1 next week. Predict what songs will finish high, and what songs are too underrated on the forums. This post has been edited by Thermometer: 15th September 2013, 11:10 AM |
106 - 101
106. Afrojack & Steve Aoki "No Beef" (28) Starting the top 106 is the electro-house floorfiller No Beef, a collaboration between Dutch DJ Afrojack and American DJ Steve Aoki. I am surprised that it was remembered enough to make the semi-finals, having only charted at #24 for a week - so it is no surprise that this finishes last. The vocals don't add much to the song, the best feature being Afrojack's signature dirty-dutch sound that comes after the drop. 105. Redlight "Get Out My Head" (29) Bristol DJ Redlight had had some big underground hits, the most notable being "What You Talking About" featuring Ms Dynamite. "Get Out My Head" was his first taste of commercial success, and it was very refreshing to hear his unique mix of house and garage in the charts. The song also features uncredited vocals from X Factor reject Nicole Jackson, which add to the catchiness of the song. Follow up "Lost In Your Love" was another commercial success for Redlight, helped by the fact that it sounds exactly the same as "Get Out My Head", but by the time he went on to release "Switch It Off" everyone had forgotten about him. 104. Sash! feat. Stunt "Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)" (34) German dance project Sash re-released their UK #2 hit single "Encore Une Fois", a song most famous for ripping off the hook of "Insomnia", in 2008 to promote their greatest hits set. However in 2008 the trance sound was very dated so it was decided that the song would be mashed up with Stunt's "Raindrops" and remixed to make it sound more 'eurocheese'. The mash-up works but looking back it sounds very of the time, remember this was released in the same year that Scooter had a #1 album. 103. David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj "Turn Me On" (38) The 5th single released from Nothing But The Beat, and the 2nd to feature the new rap sensation that was Nicki Minaj. The twist is, she only does 1 short rap verse in the whole song. Like most of his songs, it is very generic but at the same time you can't help but love it. It is not his best though and this countdown reflects that, as there are 2 more of his songs to come later on in the chart. 102. DJ Fresh feat. Rita Ora "Hot Right Now" (40) The DJ's second UK #1 single and the song that introduced newcomer Rita Ora, or as many people like to call her because of her sluttiness, Rita Whora. The song is responsible for bringing drum n' bass to the mainstream and it's a fun 'hands in the air' tune. Unfortunately it is largely forgotten now thanks to the new kings of d n' b, Rudimental. 101. The Prodigy "Voodoo People" (42) The first Prodigy entry of 6 in the chart, and one that I wasn't familiar with before the countdown. It is what you would expect from a Prodigy record really, a standard jungle/rave beat and minimal vocals. If you want a paragraph about how great this song is, ask Bre. Or maybe not, because he forgot to vote in this. |
100 - 96
100. Porter Robinson "Language" (44) The first song in the top 100 as voted by you is one of the most underrated songs of last year, Porter Robinson's Language which has a few massive supporters of the song on the forums. It topped my personal chart for 6 weeks in the summer of last year, it has all the ingredients to make a perfect dance song; a hard-hitting beat, a recognizable melody and a short vocal section. Sadly the song was never the massive hit it deserved to be thanks to Ministry of Sound messing up the release, as they are well-known for doing. It was held back for far too long which gave it a very short chart run. Oh well, at least it officially went in the UK Top 10. 099. The Prodigy "Out of Space" (44) The second entry from 90s dance group, The Prodigy - and this one is a lot better than the first. It mixes the the hardcore music scene, with the rave sound that they are known for. It also has a great sample, which sounds a little out of place in the song until the beat kicks in. 098. Chase & Status feat. Delilah "Time" (46) British duo Chase & Status released their first album without many people noticing. One of the songs on that album, "Pieces" featuring Plan B got them noticed by underground fans, and the duo went on to release 3 more singles from an upcoming album that were all top 10 hits. I had been converted to a C&S fan, well, a flop C&S fan, as I had not and still not listened to their 2nd album No More Idols. What's this got to do with Time, I know you are asking yourself - well I had expected another killer single from them after Blind Faith, and was left disappointed when they released Time - which in my opinion was just a standard drum n' bass track with no unique selling point for me. Over time it has grown but it is still one of my least favourite of their singles to date. Clearly you love it and the song enters at #98 to become their first of three entries. 097. Magnetic Man feat. Katy B "Perfect Stranger" (46) This was the second single to be released from Magnetic Man's debut album. Magnetic Man themselves are made up of Skream, Benga and Artwork. Skream and Benga are now well known for hosting a nighttime radio 1 show, and Artwork is well know for, oh. Anyway, this somehow made it in the semi-finals over the superior "I Need Air" and I've gotta review it. "Perfect Stranger" is a nice song but I never really loved it, the chorus is quite weak and Katy B has been involved in better songs, such as "Aaliyah" which has been re-released as "What Love Is Made Of". Seriously, those two songs sound the same. 096. Inna "Hot" (48) The first of two entries by the Romanian pop singer and my personal favourite of hers, "Hot" went into the UK top 10 to kickstart the short Romanian dance trend which is sadly now over. Any straight person would agree with me that Inna is very hot, and this song really shows it. There is nothing groundbreaking in the production but I enjoy it for what it is, a fun dance-pop song with lovely vocals. This post has been edited by Wake #Thermo Up: 28th July 2013, 01:51 PM |
Inna's ''Hot'' is a fantastic song. It's the last dance song I remember being absolutely CRAZY about. It spend 10 weeks at #1 in my personal chart which is still the most weeks at #1 any song has spent there (probably won't ever change since I don't do my chart anymore). Definitely one of my favorite singles of the noughties.
Time and Hot are both brilliant I didn't give the former nearly enough love when it came out, definitely Chase & Status' (and Delilah's) best!
OK I know I didn't help and all but wadafuq at 'Language' being that low?!
'Time' is definitely Chase & Status' weakest single for me. Maybe on par with 'Let You Go'. They released most of the worst on 'No More Idols' as singles This post has been edited by Bré: 28th July 2013, 01:20 PM |
100 - 96 099. The Prodigy "Out of Space" (44) The second entry from 90s dance group, The Prodigy - and this one is a lot better than the first. It mixes the the trance music scene, also known as the definitive sound of 90s dance, with the rave sound that they are known for. It also has a great sample, which sounds a little out of place in the song until the beat kicks in. I apreciate the right-ups but I dont think trance wasn't the definitive sound of the 90s. and I also dont even hear any trance in Out of Space. ....and Buzzjack!!!! WTF is this doing at number 99? It among the greatest things that has ever been played in a club. This post has been edited by AnthonyT: 28th July 2013, 01:26 PM |
95 - 91
095. Urban Cookie Collective "The Key, The Secret" (49) Firstly we have another 90s song, this one dates back to July 1993, so yes it is exactly 20 years old. It couldn't sound more 90s if it tried, which may be why it got this high. I personally am not a big fan of it, there are much better 90s hits out there, some of which are still to come in this countdown. 094. Calvin Harris feat. Florence Welch "Sweet Nothing" (50) And now for a song I'm more familiar with, this famously ended Calvin's run of #2 singles from 18 Months (excluding We Found Love as we didn't know it would be on his album until Calvin revealed the tracklist) by debuting at #1. It's another typical Calvin Harris song, but the formula definitely works as I loved it. 2012 was a year full of surprises and one of them was the fact that Florence sounded amazing on a dance record. 093. Calvin Harris feat. Kelis "Bounce" (51) And while we're talking about 18 Months, coincidentally this next entry comes from the album. It was released as his comeback single and I loved everything about it - from the synth that sounds like it's from an old computer game, to the drop which combines this synth with a higher pitched sound and added bass! 092. The Prodigy "Warrior's Dance" (52) The third section in a row where I've had to review one of their songs, and this time it's the second single from their most recent album. The song manages to sound less 90s but at the same time keep their signature sound. A comeback single from these guys would be very much appreciated soon as it's almost been 5 years since their album was out! 091. Nero "Guilt" (52) This was released as the second single from their stunning debut album Welcome Reality, for which a follow-up is expected to be released in 2014. Nero are one of the acts responsible for bringing dubstep to the mainstream, and with a big bassline but at the same time having a melody, it was no surprise that I loved this. However their debut single "Me And You" is, in my opinion, still their best. |
I apreciate the right-ups but I dont think trance wasn't the definitive sound of the 90s. and I also dont even hear any trance in Out of Space. Oops getting my genres mixed up. I knew I should've looked on wikipedia What I meant to say is that it has hardcore influences And trance was the definitive sound of the late 90s dance music scene imo, not so much the early 90s though. |
90 - 86
090. Daft Punk "Da Funk" (53) The first of four entries for French duo Daft Punk, this was one of their first chart hits - entering at #7 in 1997, the year I was born. Some of you are probably feeling old while reading this. The song itself is a standard DP song with the robotic futuristic sound that they are known for. The lack of vocals on the song is a disappointment though which is why I appreciate their other hits more (Harder Better Faster Stronger sadly didn't manage to get into this countdown) 089. Disclosure feat. Eliza Doolittle "You & Me" (54) Another duo here, this time for brothers Guy & Howard Lawrence, better known as Disclosure. Featuring the vocals of Eliza Doolittle, Disclosure brought back garage to the charts and did the impossible task of making an Eliza Doolittle song worth listening to. Unfortunately she has gone back to her dated pop sound with new single "Big When I Was Little". 088. Madison Avenue "Don't Call Me Baby" (56) This was a UK #1 smash in 2000 and it's nice enough but it doesn't bring anything new to the table and sounds very much of its time. 087. The Prodigy "Firestarter" (57) Arguably the song that they are most remembered for is this, a UK #1 in 1996. Its energetic beat and loud vocals contribute to this and I imagine that this would have gone down well in a club at the time. Compared to the eurocheese, trance and house that was doing well in the late 90s, this was more rebellious and that is part of its appeal. Not my favourite song of theirs though, that is still to come. 086. Scooter "The Logical Song" (59) A cover of Supertramp's song of the same name, but it could not sound more different to the original if it tried. With hard beats, shouting and high-pitched singing, it's a hot mess of a dance song, but it's one of my guilty pleasures. |
