Inspired by a convo I was having with Iz (lol) t'other week where he claimed never to have heard Cher's 'Believe', what are your favourite 'Gay Anthems' and are there any super iconic ones that you've never heard?

Sidebar: Contrary to what most playlists/compilations I was looking at as research for this thread, any female singer doing a song about bonking does not a 'Gay Anthem' make. The best definition I've found on the internet so far is this one:

QUOTE
A gay anthem is a popular song that has become widely popular among, or has become identified with, the gay community, particularly homosexual men, although some of these songs may also become anthems for the rest of the LGBT community.

Vogue, Dancing Queen & It's Raining Men by Geri Halliwell are probably my favourites! I assume they all apply to the definition of a gay anthem anyway.

I've loved this song for years, and only learned recently that it was a gay anthem -

See the one I really hate.

YMCA mad.gif Not really an anthem but always associated with gays.

I'd say Cher - Believe is my fave though music.gif

once upon a time I loved gay anthems, then I started hearing them on lazy pub rotation compilations year in year out till I just can't take 'em anymore. You know the ones, the VERY famous ones! It's a bit like hearing the same xmas oldies, but for every week of the year!

I do like less-obvious ones though, that seem to have been forgotten, there's dozens of those...

Clarifying, I said I'd never heard it in full, I know the hook but have no desire to listen to the full thing.

This convo then had me going on a journey where Lex and Leww quizzed me on my opinion of supposed gay anthems. We might have settled on my favourite of the absolute 'homo classics' being either an ABBA one that's classed as such or The Weather Girls. kink.gif

Though if Stay The Night is counted I'm very much up for that. For the purposes of this thread only.

Oh indeed, many of the ones I got 'tested' on were very much 'really'? Amusing how 'gay anthems' tend to be the most overplayed and boringly obvious songs ever (and therefore loved by musically ignorant straight people), at least the ones of that category which are pop and have no guitar.

i dk about the rest of you but to me this sort of defines gay anthem:

self-indulgent intro, unexpected icon, overly-expensive video, and well, an absolutely incredible tune

(tbqf dancing on ice made it with laura 2 to 3 years ago, tho still better than titanic...)

wub.gif My second favourite song of Celine's and one of the best songs of the 90s. Personally I'd consider it to be more of a "powerful song by a gay icon" as opposed to it being a gay anthem per se, but that's just me.

Gay anthems not yet mentioned: Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive' and Diana Ross' 'I'm Coming Out'!

^ such obvious choices Jay!

Personally, I've only recently discovered this 80s track that could probably count as a Gay Anthem and it's rather incredible!

Not exclusively gay but:

Is the 'classic' anthem for me. Modern gay anthem would be "Fancy" but that's even less of an exclusively gay anthem.
