I didn't celebrate when Margaret Thatcher died. Maybe it's because I was a few months old when she left office, or because I felt very far removed from her, but either way her death didn't bring any sense of jubilation. However, whenever I heard the news that Ian Paisley had died, I think I felt the same emotions felt by those who hated Thatcher when news of her death came through.

He was a sectarian, anti-Catholic bigot (quote - "They breed like rabbits and multiply like vermin"), who caused misery for many people of my background (including several generations of my own family), and his fiery rhetoric only served to inflame the conflict over here. As to those people who are praising him as a peacemaker for getting into government with Sinn Fein in 2007, that's like praising someone for cleaning the bathroom after they had spend 40 years taking a dump in the bathtub.

I won't mourn his passing. However, I won't celebrate his death either, as even though I did not like him, I find such actions to be in bad taste. My thoughts are with his wife and children at this time.

As the union hangs in the balance, Ian Paisley dies. Sometimes politics can be very, very poetic.
