Now don't get me wrong I'm all for charity, and I Macmillan is close to my heart, but this ridiculous Go Sober October campaign is doing my nut in. Whatever next, 'No Chocolate Christmas'. Call me a cynic, but this is just done for brand development & reinforcement, as shown by the attempts to jump on to the ALS bandwagon! I don't actually see a long term point to the campaign.

So now begs the question, has anyone signed up to do this? I will also state, in recent times, October has also been 'Stoptober'.

I would rather just donate than spend a whole month sober.

I see the point of the whole 'Stoptober' thing for smoking - but for alcohol? No.

Not a chance I'm afraid. I don't drink very often, so it doesn't really feel like it'd be a challenge, and I'm not going dry for a set period of 31 days just to satisfy a 'goal'. Also, leave my birthday month alone.

That's just what I why I don't see the point. I am going to imagine there will be lots of 'can't wait till the 1st to have a drink!!!' and to me that kinda defeats the point. There is no long term goal. Can't see many people with proper drink problems giving it a go, but I suppose quite a few will. Just for me, it's a bit rushed and pointless.. surely something like 'No Junk Food month' would be more beneficial.

I've not touched a drop of alcohol in October yet. But that's not because of this. I'm refraining from drinking unless I'm on a night out for health reasons anyway.

And can't you technically drink and still be sober? If you haven't drunk too much?

I'm not, but if I were I'd be succeeding. In fact, I haven't had a drink since I turned 26 (8 days, not that impressive really).

This. I only drink once or at most twice a month usually, because as much as I love a g&t, I'm generally quite up on my health. I inadvertently go a month without drinking sometimes, so I don't see the point of setting it as a 'goal'. I actually think that for so many people to see going a month without drinking as such a challenge only highlights the issue with binge drinking that Britain has.

Sorry for the negativity. It's always good to see things being done for charity, either way.
