so manners. are they still important in the 21st century? or an outdated victorian notion of what it is to be prim, proper and frigid.

really interesting article on the bbc news website, talking about manners in the 21st century and the questions people write in and ask a manners expert. was wondering what people's answers are to the most commonly asked:

When is it rude to use your mobile phone?
Can you smoke e-cigarettes at work?
How do you kiss someone socially?
Can you eat and do your make-up on public transport?
Can you recline your seat on aeroplanes?
When should you give your seat up on public transport?
Is it okay to blind copy (bcc) someone into an email?
Can you eat before everyone has been served?
is #slayberry a worthwhile alias?

You know, I'm all for showing your love to your partner. But the absolute worst is when a couple are literally sucking face in a public place such as a bus/pub etc. It's like have some class, you've got a bedroom for that.

as gross as it actually is, does it constitute bad manners? i mean yes it is vulgar to see but shouldn't offend anyone? of course if they're making out sat on your bathroom sink and break it, that is a whole different kettle of fish...

Some days I think that manners are on a serious decline and then someone is really nice and polite and i feel like all hope is not yet lost.

When is it rude to use your mobile phone? - With company
Can you smoke e-cigarettes at work? - Never
How do you kiss someone socially? - Without looking like you're a predator trying to devour your pray
Can you eat and do your make-up on public transport? - Not if you want to do a good job of it. Long distance trains is acceptable but not so sure about a bus.
Can you recline your seat on aeroplanes? - NEVER. There's shite all leg room to begin with. I detest people who decline their seats and have asked people not to before so that I can actually make it to the end of the flight with blood still circulating to my legs.
When should you give your seat up on public transport? - For those obviously in need (Prego, Infirm etc)
Is it okay to blind copy (bcc) someone into an email? - Essential for keeping people in the loop when you want them to be aware of something but not respond
Can you eat before everyone has been served? - Absolutely not.

I do think it is quite rude actually. I mean, when your in a public place such as a bar or restaurant your there to socialise and stuff, not watch people playing tonsil tennis. It's not offensive, no, but I do think it constitutes bad manners because it's not fair on the people minding there own business having to witness that.

I always end up with a recliner in front of me on an aeroplane so that for me is the height of bad manners and is the thing out of everything that gets on me tits. I find swearing in public, or swearing when a stranger is in ear-shot is quite rude too and something I'd never do.

A lot of the manners vary on who I'm with and whether it is appropriate for that situation, when I'm with close friends I do tend to relax my manners but just in public or with company I'm not comfortable with I'll try not to do anything that could offend them.

I've been in many a "bag on seat" situations. I like to think I'm polite enough to move my bag if the bus/train is filling up fast.

Rudest thing IMO is smoking and walking slowly. Delaying me and blowing smoke in my face, urgh!

These two are bad enough on their own but when COMBINED?! Actual nightmare.

I try to not eat on public transport not because I'm trying to not be rude, but because I'm self-conscious over people watching me eat, haha.
If I was to be really hungry on a journey though I'd eat something healthy so people can't judge me on my food choices.

When is it rude to use your mobile phone?
During a job interview or when someone is directly talking to you.

Can you smoke e-cigarettes at work?
No. E-cigs are another one of my pet peeves - sure, they may be "safer", but they've yet to invent an e-cig that doesn't make the user look like a smug t**t whilst doing so.

How do you kiss someone socially?
Once on the cheek.

Can you eat and do your make-up on public transport?
Never at the same time.

Can you recline your seat on aeroplanes?
Yes, but do it very slowly, so the person in behind doesn't realise it's happening.

When should you give your seat up on public transport?
If they're elderly, pregnant, or have young children with them.

Is it okay to blind copy (bcc) someone into an email?
Yes.

Can you eat before everyone has been served?
Yes, as long as you're with close friends. In a work/business environment, it's a no-no.

Does that make it rude?

Probably the most irritating example of inconsideration for me is people over the age of 10 that shout or just lark about loudly on public trains whether they're pissed or not, I don't expect everyone to be quiet on trains, but don't make it like a public viewing into a personal conversation or something.

I agree about the eating thing as well, I get self-conscious about people watching me eat any time I'm in public, even a when I'm having a meal with friends/family, I try and eat purposefully healthy and a small portion! laugh.gif
