It's time to look back on everyone's favourite Christmas adverts - the famous John Lewis Christmas adverts! With the 2014 advert due to premiere in a couple of days, I thought it was time to decide what our favourite song from the adverts is, and our favourite overall advert taking into account the story, the song and everything else! Feel free to rank them all below and I hope this was the right forum for this, it doesn't really apply to just Pop/Charts or just TV so I thought The Lounge was the right place.

Also, check out this The Guardian article for a brief overview of each advert!

2007 | Shadows
"Whoever you're looking for this Christmas"

Music: 'Morning Serenade' from Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev

2008 | From Me To You
"If you know the person, you'll find the present"

Music: 'From Me To You' by John Lewis Music Society Singers feat. Matt Spinner

2009 | Sweet Child Of Mine
"Remember how Christmas used to feel? Give someone that feeling"

Music: 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Taken by Trees

2010 | A Tribute To Givers
"For those who care about showing they care"

Music: 'Your Song' by Ellie Goulding

2011 | The Long Wait
"For gifts you can't wait to give"

Music: 'Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want' by Slow Moving Millie

2012 | The Journey
"Give a little more love this Christmas"

Music: 'The Power of Love' by Gabrielle Aplin

2013 | The Bear and the Hare
"Give someone a Christmas they'll never forget"

Music: 'Somewhere Only We Know' by Lily Allen

The Long Wait was an amazing advert - the concept and execution were brilliant. Song wise I prefer "The Power of Love".

Is it bad that I don't really care about the adverts though?! Probably either the Ellie or Slow Moving Millie one idk.

'The Power of Love' is my favourite too, closely followed by 'Your Song'.

Advert-wise, the Bear and the Hare is probably just my favourite closely followed by The Long Wait and then The Journey.

Totally agree.

The Long Wait has the perfect execution and story but 'The Power of Love' is by far the best song to come out of the adverts.

Don't particularly like any of the songs, nor the ads for that matter.

Your Song & The Long Wait both best of a bad bunch.

The Bear and the Hare wins by a mile in terms of the actual adverts. Best song for me is narrowly 'Sweet Child O' Mine', mostly because it wasn't massively overexposed like the rest of them - a really lovely little version, not too surprised that I'm the only one voting for it though. I do like the Ellie, Millie and Lily (I sense a theme here) tracks too, 'Your Song' and 'Somewhere Only We Know' both just got a bit old from overplay, especially the former.

Boo at 'The Power Of Love' leading though. So dull.

Also, John Lewis have just confirmed on Twitter that this year's advert will premiere tomorrow morning! I love these adverts so much in recent years, I'm very excited - especially for the music of course! And as I read on here somewhere, it looks like this year's story is about the adorable Monty the Penguin with the character being seen on Channel 4 idents, London Underground billboards and cuddly toy version of the character being delivered to some lucky journalists. Full details here.

Somewhere only we know + bare and the hare
The former is one of my favourite songs ever and the latter is a beautiful animated advert with a lovely story

I would rank them:

01. 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Taken by Trees - I actually really loved this and still play it regularly. Really wonderful cover that works really well, I guess I preferred it to the others because it was taking a song that initially you couldn't think could be done in this style.
02. 'The Power of Love' by Gabrielle Aplin - Out of all of them, this feels the most Christmassy, which I suppose means the enjoyment I get out of it is restricted to wintertime, but it's really lovely to hear anyway.
03. 'Your Song' by Ellie Goulding - Bit overexposed at the time and coming from an artist who's great with her own work, disappointing, but nice and all.
04. 'Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want' by Slow Moving Millie - A real WTF choice of singer and song - very obscure and quite awkwardly placed between a string of big hits in the John Lewis songs timeline.
05. 'From Me To You' by John Lewis Music Society Singers feat. Matt Spinner - I recall this being quite pleasant.
06. 'Somewhere Only We Know' by Lily Allen - Very weak with a severe lack of any sort of feeling, particularly next to the original. This just didn't suit her at all other than a way than a smart way to get her name out there - and that was confirmed by the fact even Lily can't listen to this any more!
07. 'Morning Serenade' from Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev - I don't remember this at all.

As for the adverts, I love The Journey and The Long Wait is very smartly executed. The Bear & The Hare should be beautiful,I just feel it's trying a bit hard in being an emotional tearjerker and making everyone go 'awww'.

2010 on all counts for me, although the Power of Love is a close second.

Maybe I'd have liked the Bear and Hare advert too, but I wasn't around to see it.

2010 was the one that started it all basically!

I assume that in this preview is this year's song, obviously its likely to be a piano/acoustic cover but does it give anyone any idea of anything that it could be?

Sam Smith maybe? It just reminds me a bit of 'I'm Not The Only One' kink.gif

I hope that they pick a relatively under the radar artist or someone that isn't an obvious choice as those are usually the ones I like the most. Really REALLY hoping the Ed Sheeran rumours aren't true as that just...wouldn't be right. Likewise Emeli Sande/Sam Smith etc.

Looks like a really cute theme though
