Just came across this article, and I feel as though it is further proof that Megan Trainor has a bit of a 'skinny shaming' issue. I know it's been discussed on Megan's topic in the pop board, but I think that anorexia is an interesting issue linked to mental health that a lot of people have misconceptions with - so I thought I'd bring it to the lounge as this article has surfaced today.

Trainor Meghan Trainor‘s breezy body acceptance anthem “All About That Bass” continues to bop along on top of the Billboard Hot 100 at the moment, but a recent comment during an interview just landed her in hot water with some critics…including Demi Lovato.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the singer-songwriter spoke about growing up as “a chubby girl” in school and being rejected by a crush because of her weight. She went on to clarify that she never battled an eating disorder — but it’s the way that she dismissed the idea that has since raised a few eyebrows.

“I wasn’t strong enough to have an eating disorder…I tried to go anorexic for a good three hours. I ate ice and celery, but that’s not even anorexic. And I quit. I was like, ‘Ma, can you make me a sandwich? Like, immediately,” she said to ET.

The idea of being “strong enough” to maintain an eating disorder didn’t sit well with some, including Demi, who has been quite vocal about her own struggle with body issues over the years. And, in a series of tweets written earlier this afternoon, she responded: “Having an eating disorder doesn’t show ‘strength,’” she began, taking the opportunity to educate regarding the reality of mental illness. Read more of what Demi had to say after the jump.

From Demi’s Twitter:

"Having an eating disorder doesn’t show “strength.” Strength is when are able to overcome your demons after being sick and tired for so long. There’s a wide misconception that anorexia and/or bulimia is a choice and you often hear people say things like ‘why doesn’t she just start eating?’ Or even ‘just stop throwing up.’ It’s the ignorance and lack of education on mental illnesses that continues to but mental health care on the back burner to congress even though this is an epidemic that is sweeping our nation, and causing more and more tragedy every day. Starving is not a ‘diet’ and throwing up isn’t something that only extremely thin men or women do. Eating disorders do not discriminate..Neither does any other mental illness. These are deadly diseases that are taking lives daily. So please, let’s be cautious of the words we use when discussing ED’s and other mental illnesses. <3"

What do you think? Do you agree with Demi? Do you think Megan is okay in saying these things?

This seems like the beginning of the lovely cycle, "build it up to tear it down".

Both sides have valid points, but it's just knit picking at this point, imo.

I think Meghan's choice of wording wasn't very wise there, but to me it looks like an off the cuff remark she made in jest in an interview or something which got misinterpreted. I agree completely with what Demi has said, but Meghan may not have had proper media training yet perhaps?

'i tried to go anorexic'

you don't need media training to know that is an awful statement.

I do agree but I think Meghan just put her story across really stupidly and didn't think before she spoke rather than she just needs media training (although she probably needs that too).

It's kind of similar with the song 'All About That Bass'. I wouldn't for a second think she actually thinks all skinny people are 'bitches', it's just that the lyrics hadn't been thought through and so the message of the song hasn't gone through properly. Perhaps Demi did jump down her throat a bit all considering, but I'm glad there's someone in the music industry who can support and speak confidently about mental issues and body image.

To be fair, she does immediately follow that with "nah, I'm just playing" in the song. tongue.gif
