Which means that Radio 1's top track is played 3.7 times per day and Capital's top track is played 10 times per day (every 2.4 hours).

Great to see Kendrick, Wretch and Andy C in R1's top 10 cheer.gif and Wiley up there too, good to see proper grime getting decent airplay!
Interesting to see Tiga and Mark Ronson creeping up the chart. Uptown Funk seems like a definate hit ,wonder how Bugatti will do? I bet Buzzjack will mainly hate it anyway laugh.gif

Capital looks so stale, do they take any risks at all!?! I understand why they solely stick to chart hits but a bit if variety surely wouldnt go amiss. Nice to see Gorgon City on their list though.

I'm surprised the Radio 1 one is that low, since I always thought A-List was about 30 plays per week, so I would've expected their most played track to be on perhaps 35 a week, but the fact that it's only 26 is definitely a good thing (unless this chart is missing plays or something).

70 a week on Capital is honestly a bit lower than I expected too, I thought the most-played track would be on about 100, but even 70 is quite a lot, that's a play every 2.4 hours if my maths is correct. It would be nice if Capital could get their most-played songs down to under 50 plays per week at least... Would help the charts move faster too.

Brilliant to see Tiga - Bugatti getting spins on Radio 1! ohmy.gif Had no idea, this song is really making its way around now.

'Bugatti' is great, sounds like a potential hit to me (maybe not a massive hit but at least top 20 perhaps).

I'm sure they're officially credited on the album version.

Every 2.4 hours, when you see it put like that, you realise just how ridiculous it is for a song to be played that often. How do people not get sick of listening to Capital?

Also interesting to note from capital the artists which they look at as 'Indie' are The Script, One Rep & Ed Sheeran whereas radio 1 have bands like Kasabian, Foo Fighters, Jungle, Catfish & the Bottlemen, Lonely the Brave, James Bay, Twin Atlantic & We are the Ocean in their top 30!

A much better variety!

Do you know exactly which period this chart covers? Is it the week ending 17/11, so Sunday to Sunday?

You kinda answered your own question there - Capital aren't there to take risks, they're there to play what is/will be popular. Radio 1 can afford to take risks more than Capital. Not every station caters towards the same audience kink.gif

Its a very narrow view of a 'chart hit' too though - even songs like All of Me get treated to a remix and they only follow the singles chart not the albums. No doubt one of the quickest sellers this year from the Foo Fighters in the album chart didnt get much airplay.

I would say they can AFFORD to take risks - the private owners of Capital are very rich no doubt!

I'm sure Capital has a younger demographic than R1, but does their audience just want the same 100 or so songs on rotation? I'm not convinced and it makes the station almost unlistenable.

Out of interest, does Kiss have the same audience?

^ Kiss FM is technically a different format to Capital FM, but they probably get similar audiences, and Kiss isn't THAT different despite being a different format.

Capital FM and Radio 1 are Top 40/pop/CHR stations (whatever you want to call it). Whilst Kiss FM is rhythmic/urban, but it is very pop-leaning.

They even play songs like Counting Stars on Kiss, although they do play an edit with extra drums in it. Kiss does play some songs that Capital wouldn't touch though, for example they played 2 Chainz/Wiz Khalifa - We Own It whilst Capital didn't. Also Kiss tends to play rap remixes of songs more than Capital, for example they play the Kid Ink remix of The Man on Kiss, whilst I assume Capital played the original version, but overall you could mistake Kiss for another pop station like Capital FM.

In terms of the demographics, last time I checked Capital FM's average listener was 30-something (which I find quite shocking, with an average age that high there must be a significant number of people 40+ who listen to the station!). Capital also gets more female listeners than males (which is normal for a pop radio station). I would assume the demographics of Kiss and Radio 1 listeners are quite similar to Capital's. There might be more up-to-date demographics info since last time I checked for Capital, but I doubt it's changed too much.

I don't think of Kiss as an urban station really, especially compared to 1xtra/Rinse/Capital Xtra. Whenever I hear Kiss they're playing songs like Shake It Off, All About That Bass and Roar, hardly urban music laugh.gif

I accept its more rhymthic leaning than Capital though, using the example of We Own It and also songs like Soundbwoy and Still Speedin were played on Kiss. Also, like Eric said they add drums to Pop Songs (like Am I Wrong) and rap remixes (like the Rick Ross version of Don't). However, on a casual listen it sounds indistinguishable from Capital, even if does have a greater depth/variety of songs.

I imagine the demographic for urban stations like 1xtra and Rinse are like 15-24 or something ridiculously low!

I imagine the demographic for urban stations like 1xtra and Rinse are like 15-24 or something ridiculously low!

Well yeah, it's very pop-leaning, even playing stuff like Counting Stars and Avicii but it is technically a rhythmic/urban station. The only reason I found out it wasn't a proper pop station was because they sometimes put the station on in my old gym and I went to research it, if I hadn't read up about it I probably would've never known. laugh.gif

See here (a list of some big UK radio stations by format): https://sites.google.com/site/urbrhypopradiostations/home/uk
Also see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiss_(UK_radio_station)

About the youngest format, in the US, rhythmic radio stations got the youngest audience in 2013 (younger than urban radio listeners). See here: http://www.arbitron.com/downloads/Radio_To...013_execsum.pdf

Not sure if it'd be the same in the UK though. But here it says Radio 1's target audience is 15-29 year-olds, whilst Radio 1Xtra's is 15-24 year-olds: http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/w...radio-one.shtml However, I would imagine Radio 1Xtra's audience is older than it's supposed to be (like Radio 1's and Capital's).

I'd have thought that rhythmic would have an older demographic than urban radio, just because rhythmic could by definition extend to dance and pop music. While urban radio is unlikely to appeal to any listeners over 30 laugh.gif

Wonder if the definition of Capital Xtra has changed since it replace Choice. Choice was purely urban and you'd never hear Calvin Harris/Avicii on there while on Capital Xtra you do. I imagine it has the same classification as Kiss.

Whenever I hear Kiss they're playing songs like Shake It Off, All About That Bass and Roar, hardly urban music

I have always said that Kiss was a rhythmic station, and I'm actually surprised that in America it gets the youngest audience (I'm 19 but for as long as I have been following American radio charts I would definitely seek out the rhythmic stations). Those songs respectively reached #17 (Taylor's highest but Blank Space might take that crown), #8 and #6 on America's rhythmic chart. Katy frequently crosses over and has notched two #1s on the format (albeit in the form of the bouncey, "stomp-stomp-clap" songs of Dark Horse and E.T.)

Also, it's very interesting to see Country radio having nearly three times as many stations as Top 40 CHR stations despite having around half the audience (based on the #1 song each week).

I'm sure they're officially credited on the album version.

Not as a featured artist. They are credited for 'additional vocals'.

Do you know exactly which period this chart covers? Is it the week ending 17/11, so Sunday to Sunday?

Yep, same as the Radiomonitor overall airplay chart's tracking period. 12:00 AM Sunday to 11:59 PM Saturday.
