Plus, an interesting interview with top music executive of Radio 1 to see what goes on behind the scenes, including how they determine their playlists:

Mildly surprised to see Secondcity there, as despite being a #1 it felt like one of the less prominent dance hits of the year. Also I'm fairtly sure Capital supported it before R1 did.

The rest I could have guessed tongue.gif

I'm surprised at SecondCity too, I don't remember them playing it *that* much. Kinda surprised there's no Coldplay in the Top 10, 'A Sky Full Of Stars' was ridiculously overplayed. In fact, to compare to the above list, these are the songs which have spent longest on the playlist so far this year:

Song | No. of weeks on playlist

Ed Sheeran - Sing - 14

Route 94 feat. Jess Glynne - My Love - 11

Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne - Rather Be 10
Coldplay - A Sky Full of Stars - 10
George Ezra - Budapest - 10
Sam Smith - Money On My Mind - 10

Calvin Harris - Summer - 9
Ellie Goulding - Goodness Gracious - 9
Imagine Dragons - Demons - 9
Katy Perry feat. Juicy J - Dark Horse - 9
Kiesza - Hideaway - 9
Paolo Nutini - Scream (Funk My Life Up) - 9
Sam Smith - Stay With Me - 9

Mumford & Sons was one, without any shadow of a doubt. I got introduced to them damn early, and I immediately sensed there was something special about the act. They were in a space that hadn’t been really in the market for a long time. They had a fresh sound, they were phenomenal live, great musicians and a charismatic act, but ultimately they had had some brilliant songs that really had the potential to resonate. They were resonating for me personally, and other people here got that, and we believed in them. And the truth is, with the first two singles that we put on to maximum rotation on Radio 1, when we looked at the audience research, the audience was saying no—they didn’t get it. But we held on, because we believed that we would get there. And on the third single, through a variety of factors, including Radio 1 belief and support, it tipped. And then they were able to go back on the early singles, and the public perception of that band and acceptance of them totally changed.

^^This is a good point. It shows why radio 1 will playlist some songs twice!

One last question. Karen Glauber wonders why you didn’t play Hozier’s "Take Me to Church" after raving about it at Glastonbury.
We have; we playlisted it. We’re supporting Hozier. [In fact, Radio 1 played the track 92 times; the station’s most-played tracks this year are in the high 300s.]

sad.gif But you didnt play it enough - its still selling well and still has potential - def an example of a song they could have 'upped the rotation of'. Hopefully they will playlist From Eden since its impact date was moved to 15/12!

^8 #1s, a #10 and a #17. I find that interesting. And their top 10 in the first post is all #1s! I bet that's unusual for Radio 1, but then again 2014 has had more #1 singles than usual. Does anyone have their most-played songs from previous years?
