Sooo Sony has been hacked with numerous leaks including their opinions on Angelina Jolie and the pay of women actors. It was by a group called 'Guardians of Peace' (ironic) who are angry with the Sony film 'The Interview' which involves Seth Rogan and James Franco as journalists who are tasked with murdering the North Korean leader.

After 9/11 style threats on the premiere and cinemas who show the film, the upcoming premier has been cancelled along with promotional slots. In addition, 6 major cinema chains have also backed out of showing the film.

Thoughts?

This story has really interested me over the past couple of days. The US release next week has officially been cancelled so the hackers have won in that respect for now. I don't know how this affects other markets though as the UK release wasn't scheduled until February?

The thing is though, the whole situation has given the movie so much publicity that if the release went ahead, terror threats aside, more people may be inclined to go and see it. I know my interest and awareness has been raised as a result. Can't blame cinema chains for pulling out but it's a shame.

The thing is I think there must be some credible threats for its release to have been scrapped. At first I thought the threats were all fictional, but it appears not. Sad really, as I love Franco & Rogen.

Seriously. I actually doubted the validity of the claims that North Korea were behind it. Well that's that then. What happens now?

In all seriousness, I think I can see both sides to it. On one hand, you have some angry people (the majority being the entirety of North Korea) complaining about the content and how it may be offensive to those referenced, so I can see why the company would want to scrap the premiere altogether. Plus those hackers...

On the other hand, I feel as though those who were actually attempting those mild terrorism threats are just pushing it way too far and have failed to recognize the satirical genius of it all. Content aside, I think we could have seen that coming considering it's Seth Rogen and James Franco of all people.

I can't help but to think about how much time and money was spent on making and promoting the film. It's just as much of a financial travesty as the "Do What U Want" video not releasing and the song's eventual underperformance. Kinda sad, really. sad.gif

Yes, because comparing the potential of another 9/11 (12/25 i guess~ black christmas~ just throwing a few potential names out there~) happening with GaGa not releasing Do What U Want is very appropriate smile.gif

It seems that this will now never be shown unless it itself leaks as the home release has also been cancelled.

Unless there was a clearly no danger behind the threats, it was the right option as it's too big of a thing to risk just for the sake of a movie. However, there is that underlying notion of there now being a precedent with any notion of a threat stopping something from happening. Hopefully though, as long as we avoid the whole North Korea situation, as they're in a whole different world by themselves anyway, something like this will never happen again.

Well $44 million dollars were spent on the film alone without any publicity, promotional and distribution costs so it'll be such a big loss for them. Apparently they've got no plans to release it in any forms now. I was kinda excited to see the film :/

I read somewhere, before it was confirmed that they had abandoned releasing the film, that it would loose them $100 million!

I guess the whole thing has made me intrigued over whether they fulfil their mission in the film or not kink.gif

i am intrigued to know what the view would be if another nation had created a comedy type film where the central plot was a plan to assassinate barack obama. i'm sure there would be outrage and similar calls for the film to be dropped and it being deemed 'a statement of terrorism'. sounds familiar doesn't it...

it's a shame that this has happened but did Sony really expect a film about killing the North Korean leader to get little/no backlash???

I think it's a disgrace to the principle of freedom of speech and expression that the film release has been cancelled. Whilst it was probably a shit film, it's about the principle of succumbing to terrorists/hackers due to fear. America is supposedly the most powerful nation in the world with one of the largest armies in the world, and they've been beaten by the North Korean trolls.
