AH Gold Chart - 1995
It's now been 20 long years since I first started keeping weekly records of my chart, and so to commemorate (or commiserate) this milestone, I've shamelessly nicked popchartfreak's idea and will post all the weekly charts of 1995 here (hope John won't mind). I would add running commentary of the events of my life from that time, but my year could easily be summed up in a couple of sentences: 'got hit at school, cried. Saw others get hit, laughed. Got hit for laughing at those that got hit, cried. Became quite good looking, thus became briefly popular and lusted after. Then developed a shit load of spots and acne, cried. And that pretty much sums up my 1995. Happy days. So, here's the first chart of the year. And aside from Black Duck and Thunder, I remember them all. w/e 7th January 1995 1. Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms 2. Human League - Tell Me When 3. Whigfield - Another Day 4. East 17 - Stay Another Day 5. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You 6. Rednex - Cotton Eyed Joe 7. Sophie B Hawkins - Don't Don't Tell Me No 8. Zig & Zag - Them Girls Them Girls 9. Kylie Minogue - Put Yourself In My Place 10. Siouxsie & The Banshees - O Baby 11. Celine Dion - Think Twice 12. Gloria Estefan - Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me 13. Boyzone - Love Me For A Reason 14. Black Duck - Whiggle In Line 15. Ini Kamoze - Here Comes The Hotstepper 16. Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy 17. Oasis - Whatever 18. M Beat ft Nazlyn - Sweet Love 19. Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World 20. 2 In A Tent - When I'm Cleaning Windows 21. Strike - U Sure Do 22. KWS ft Teddy Pendergrass - The More I Get The More I Want 23. Whigfield - Saturday Night 24. Eternal - Oh Baby I 25. Madonna - Take A Bow 26. MC Sar & The Real McCoy - Another Night 27. Pato Banton - Baby Come Back 28. Eternal - Crazy 29. Erasure - I Love Saturday 30. Sparks - When Do I Get To Sing My Way 31. Hi AH, hooray!!! Actual archive charts apart from mine, fabulous!
Ah school days eh, I can relate, except for the good looking bit, I didn't get lusted after till I hit 40....and not much then Great chart! I think I charted most of them, give or take Zig & Zag and a couple of others, and a lot of the key ones are spookily similar to my chart placings. Look forward to seeing the rest |

Cheers John! Glad you're looking forward to this thread. Promise I'll make more of an effort to comment on yours too no worries, they keep getting hits so I think people just dip in and out to see if there's anything theyve forgotten about or never knew I'm looking forward to your next number one and hoping it's the same as my first topper of 1995 - it might well be! |

Always remember loving the video to Kylies Single Put Yourself In My Place when it came out. In the video she recreates the scene from the Film Barbarella and strips off her space suit

w/e 21st January 1995
* Just one week at the top for the Human League, as N Trance take over with the club classic Set You Free * A future AH Gold No.1 (19 years later in remixed form) enters for the first time at 16 for R Kelly. It won't get any higher first time round * Also underperforming (and would chart a lot higher if it was now) are Massive Attack and Tracey Thorn who debut at their #24 peak. At the time, I preferred Celine Dion's Think Twice which will stick around in the top 20 for a while yet * 1 (2) N Trance - Set You Free 2 (1) Human League - Tell Me When 3 (5) Nicki French - Total Eclipse Of The Heart 4 (NE) Deuce - Call It Love 5 (NE) Scarlet - Independent Love Song 6 (6) Ini Kamoze - Here Comes The Hotstepper 7 (3) Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms 8 (NE) Donna Allen - Real 9 (6) Rednex - Cotton Eyed Joe 10 (9) Celine Dion - Think Twice 11 (7) Whigfield - Another Day 12 (12) Sophie B Hawkins - Don't Don't Tell Me No 13 (NE) Mr Roy - Saved 14 (15) Lightning Seeds - Change 15 (8) Tyrell Corporation - Better Days Ahead 16 (NE) R Kelly - Bump N Grind 17 (10) Portishead - Glory Box 18 (16) Loveland ft Rachel McFarlane - I Need Somebody 19 (20) Strike - U Sure Do 20 (14) Kylie Minogue - Put Yourself In My Place 21 (11) East 17 - Stay Another Day 22 (NE) TLC - Creep 23 (27) Bill Whelan - Riverdance 24 (NE) Massive Attack ft Tracey Thorn - Protection 25 (19) M Beat ft Nazlyn - Sweet Love 26 (13) Zig & Zag - Them Girls Them Girls 27 (17) Siouxsie & The Banshees - O Baby 28 (18) Gloria Estefan - Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me 29 (21) Black Duck - Whiggle In Line 30 (22) Boyzone - Love Me For A Reason 31 (28) Oasis - Whatever 32 (24) Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy 33 (23) Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You 34 (29) Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World 35 (25) KWS ft Teddy Pendergrass - The More I Get The More I Want 36 (31) Eternal - Oh Baby I 37 (NE) New Order - 1963 38 (NE) Thelma Houston - Don't Leave Me This Way (Remix) 39 (34) Shawn Colvin ft Mary Chapin Carpenter - One Cool Remove 40 (NE) Jim Carrey - Cuban Pete |

quite a few of these I don't know (or have forgotten) and I few I was aware of but dont recall (like Jim Carrey), but good to see Thelma Houston in there too, along with TLC Massive Attack New Order. I did go big on a Deuce record - but not this one (I think...)

Of the new entries I was partial I think to Let Loose and Simple Minds, also MC Sar/Real McCoy and Vanessa mae. We'll see how the memory stacks up against reality in a week or so when I do my 1995 January chart too!
Top 10 Strike and Scarlet I also rated, apart from (Obviously) Human League and N Trance.. |

good to see Barry White in their, AH, though the ones I loved most were Perfecto, REM, MN8, M People and The The of the new entries. Most of them then
Deuce had a popchartfreak number 1, too. Not this one though... |

* Deuce spend a 2nd week on top holding off erm..something called Superdoopa. How to explain?...basically, a few friends and I made a really terrible song using some really terrible equipment. Fortunately, no physical evidence of this remains (I hope, anyway). Anyway, you'll just have to take my word for it that it was truly dreadful and mercifully, it gets no higher than No.2 and will vanish in a few weeks * A Radio 1 fave, yet a total flop (it didn't reach the Top 75), Junior Reid's Listen To The Voices debuts at No.12, on its way to the top. * Adam Ant returns at 25, though won't get any higher with the largely forgotten Wonderful * M People get their biggest hit (although One Night In Heaven, Don't Look Any Further, How Can I Love You More and Renaissance would all have made the top 5 had my chart started earlier) * 1 (1) Deuce - Call It Love 2 (NE) Superdoopa - Superdoopa 3 (6) Perfecto All Starz - Reach Up (Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag) 4 (2) Scarlet - Independent Love Song 5 (3) N Trance - Set You Free 6 (17) M People - Open Your Heart 7 (8) MN8 - I've Got A Little Something For You 8 (7) Human League - Tell Me When 9 (4) MC Sar & The Real McCoy - Run Away 10 (5) Nicki French - Total Eclipse Of The Heart 11 (11) Celine Dion - Think Twice 12 (NE) Junior Reid - Listen To The Voices 13 (14) Lightning Seeds - Change 14 (9) Vanessa Mae - Toccata & Fugue 15 (12) Ini Kamoze - Here Comes The Hotstepper 16 (10) Strike - U Sure Do 17 (NE) Sheryl Crow - Strong Enough 18 (13) Jimmy Somerville - Heartbeat 19 (15) Bill Whelan - Riverdance 20 (18) Donna Allen - Real 21 (16) Mr Roy - Saved 22 (34) Usura - Open Your Mind 23 (NE) Sting - This Cowboy Song 24 (22) Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - We've Got Tonight 25 (NE) Adam Ant - Wonderful 26 (NE) China Black - Almost See You (Somewhere) 27 (19) Rednex - Cotton Eyed Joe 28 (24) Tyrell Corporation - Better Days Ahead 29 (23) Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms 30 (20) Green Day - Basket Case 31 (26) Portishead - Glory Box 32 (21) Let Loose - One Night Stand 33 (NE) Jade - Every Day Of The Week 34 (27) R Kelly - Bump N Grind 35 (36) Massive Attack ft Tracey Thorn - Protection 36 (25) R.E.M - Crush With Eyeliner 37 (30) Sophie B Hawkins - Don't Don't Tell Me No 38 (31) Whigfield - Another Day 39 (NE) Carter - The Unstoppable Sex Machine - The Young Offender's Mum 40 (NE) Jimmy Nail - Cowboy Dreams Departing The Top 40: 28 (NE) Luther Vandross - Always & Forever 29 (NE) The The - I Saw The Light 32 (24) Kylie Minogue - Put Yourself In My Place 33 (27) M Beat ft Nazlyn - Sweet Love 35 (29) East 17 - Stay Another Day 37 (NE) Secret Life - Love So Strong 38 (NE) DJ Scott & Lorna B - Do You Wanna Party 39 (NE) Barry White - Practise What You Preach/Love Is The Icon 40 (28) Zig & Zag - Them Girls Them Girls |

The 2 that are most vivid to me are the cowboy tracks, Sting and Jimmy nail, of the new entries. I'm not sure if I charted Junior Reid, that should be interesting to see....
(just checks) yes it peaked at 40. Our charts are similar and different, though UK chart based anyway. No Superdoopa in my chart, so you're free to breathe a sigh of relief... |
