At this rate, I won't be surprised if the singles certification drops to 50k for Gold (if streaming isn't counted). The singles sales have been quite awful last year also. At least compilations don't dominate the albums chart as they used to, even with NRJ's many different compilations selling well.

Taylor is super lucky to score a Top 10 hit in France as that chart is still based on only sales. Funny enough, SNEP was supposed to integrate streaming to the singles chart back in October but they keep on delaying it. They do have the official streaming chart (separately) on SNEP website. Like I said before, will it take another few years?? Their streaming chart should be interesting since Deezer is just as popular as Spotify in France, I think.

NRJ compilation missed the Top 10??? ohmy.gif ohmy.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Oh, I thought they'd already integrated streaming.

Is that the first time Taylor has been Top 10?

I thought so too. Even the forum at ChartsinFrance is confused as to why it hasn't been integrated yet. It was expected to happen mid October. Then again, this is SNEP. So, things don't always go smoothly. I have no idea what takes them so long.

I do believe this is Taylor's first Top 10 hit!! So, the delay has very few advantages. Haha.

Aren't they embarrassed by those sales numbers. I would think they'd be doing whatever they could to make the chart look more relevant.

Unfortunately the sales numbers have been like that for years now. It's on a downward trend but I'm not shocked to see them. I would imagine part of the problem is trying to find a good weighting - if they include streaming with the same 100 : 1 ratio that the UK uses then sales will suddenly shoot up a lot but it would also lead to streaming making up like 75% of the chart "points"... And that'd be a somewhat extreme jump from sales being 100% dominant.

It's also arguably a bad thing for the French music industry because like with the somewhat smaller British artists, I can't imagine most French artists will do as well on streaming as they do on sales. And chart positions matter, even if they care for them less in France than in the UK.

Source (in French): http://www.chartsinfrance.net/actualite/news-101939.html

Been a while since we saw a French Chart thread here on Buzzjack. Starting from today, streaming has been included in the singles charts (albums to be added soon). Their methodology is multiplying the download sales by 150 and adding the streaming data.

The response from many was like "huh? huh.gif ". My initial response was like that, until I had a bit of a rethink and it kinda makes sense since streaming is now the dominant source for music today. So, the first #1 single of the new French integrated chart is Drake with One Dance (2.88m combined units, with 2.47m streams and 2700 sales).

And the selected released ranks and their "combined units" for this week (the divided methodology, in bold, (or "equivalent sales") was provided by Haribo at ATRL and Petit Prince, Dark Lights from ChartsinFrance):

1. Drake f/ WizKid & Kyla – One Dance: 2.88 million units / 150 = 19.2k
2. Sia f/ Sean Paul – Cheap Thrills: 2.47 million units (incl. 1.96 million streams) / 150 = 16.5k
3. Justin Timberlake – Can't Stop the Feeling: 2.2 million units (incl. 4.8k downloads) / 150 = 14.7k
4. Kungs – This Girl: 1.89 million units / 150 = 12.6k
5. Desiigner – Panda: 1.73 million units / 150 = 11.5k
6. Imany – Don't Be So Shy
7. Mike Posner – Took a Pill in Ibiza: 1.57 million units / 150 = 10.5k
8. Calvin Harris f/ Rihanna – This Is What You Came For: 1.47 million units / 150 = 9.8k
9. Alan Walker – Faded: 1.31 million units / 150 = 8.7k
10. Deorro f/ Elvis Crespo – 1.3 million units (incl. 2.6k downloads & 904k streams) / 150 = 8.7k
20. Zara Larsson – Lush Life: 0.98 million units / 150 = 6.5k
21. Céline Dion – Encore un soir: 0.913 million units (incl. 3.1k downloads & 451k streams) / 150 = 6.1k
26. Maître Gims – Ma beauté: 0.865 million units (incl. 1.8k downloads & 600k streams) / 150 = 5.8k
38. Jul – Émotions: ~0.79 million units (incl. 1.6k downloads & 550k streams) / 150 = 5.3k vs. ~900 pure sales w/o streaming at #38

Surely SNEP won't do that when the album streaming gets integrated to the charts. Obviously the certification threshold will change once again but I wonder how the singles certifications will be done?

I am really curious as regards what they will do with certifications. As you can see above, 'units' on the single chart have suddenly shot from the low thousands to the low millions - Platinum singles are 150k right now (what an absurdly ambitious number in 2016) - is that suddenly going to change to 50 million or so?

The formula is strange in terms of how it's going to impact systems like certifications but overall I think the reaction on places like CiF is a bit over the top. It's a pretty simple formula and doesn't seem to compare particularly unfavourably to the British system to me (certainly it is better than Billboard's).

Personally I'm just sad we probably won't ever get another Mylène Farmer #1.
