New music will be released every Friday from this summer, following a decision announced by the music industry today.

Singles are currently issued in the UK on Sundays, with albums released on Mondays – but the new move means new singles and albums will be released at 00.01 local time every Friday.

The change comes after global record labels association IFPI announced today that Friday will be deemed as release day in all key countries round the world, following consultation with indie and major labels, artist representative organisations and music retailers.

The move means that artists will be able to instantly release their music on the same day worldwide, instead of releases being staggered through the week, on different days in different countries.

For instance, next month’s Madonna album Rebel Heart will be released on Monday in the UK, Tuesday in the US, on Friday in Germany and Australia – but, were it released after the summer change, it would be released on Friday in every country around the world.

The change is expected to have an impact on chart compilers around the world – and the Official charts Company issued the following statement: "Following the announcement that the record industry is moving to a synchronised global release day of Friday, we will also be looking to move the UK chart announcement day. Exact details are to be decided but Radio 1 will continue to be the home of the Official Chart."

Why does everything have to happen 6 months later in the year, does anyone bother to think, it would make so much sense to begin at the start of the year. Surely the week ending chart date will change and the announcement of the charts instead of Sunday to accommodate the move.

Also lack of mids during the week... ooops unsure.gif ohmy.gif

This is great news, think it makes total sense to have a global release. I also like that albums and singles are going to be released on the same day

This is being discussed already in another thread is it not? kink.gif

I share your frustrations though Martin, it'd make more sense to start all this at the beginning of the year!

Maybe Radio 1's midweek show will move to Monday and the Official Chart on Friday evenings?

I don't particularly like this change, especially happening randomly in the middle of the year.

And the week before the change will probably be based on 5 days of sales for one week only, am I right? unsure.gif

I'm pretty much assuming that Radio 1 Chart Show will be moved to Fridays 4pm-7pm, since the chart is compiled from Friday-Thursday. Kinda saw it coming actually.

I also agree, why mid-year instead of beginning of the year? Will this mean Billboard might relaunch European Hot 100, this time based on sales and streaming (Billboard does have the European singles chart, but it's based only on sales, I think and only Top 20)? Alternatively, will IFPI have a weekly worldwide singles and albums chart now that we have Friday as global launch day (again based on sales and audio streaming)?

I don't see how it makes much difference when they make the change. Whenever it is done, there will be a short week. Why does it matter whether that is the last week of the year or some random week in the middle of the year?

A Friday chart show may be the result but, surely, a large part of the target audience won't be around at 4.00. We may see a return to the days when the Chart Show was a rundown of a chart that had already been published a few days before.

That's what I thought. Surely less people will listen to the chart show on a Friday?

A Friday show would be the ideal practice 4 to 7pm on a Friday doesn't really feel right, surely the timing will probably get changed, you don't really need a 3 hour show listening to the same records every week, more like the show getting condensed, with a time shift 6.00 to 8pm or 5pm to 8pm if they insist on a 3 hour show.

Will there be a show though for the short week, that's the nagging point.

Why would there not be a show for the short week? Even if it is on a Friday, I'm sure there won't be a problem with having the Sunday show followed by the next one five days later.

Well...I've got TBH the last time I tuned into the Radio 1 chart was well over 2 years ago when The Saturdays were in to find out they were #1 (with Jameela in her chicken suit. Ah, halcyon days). So it won't really have any great impact on me. I'm more of a Big Top 40 man these days if I do bother to 'listen' to the chart as it were.

I have however, thought for a good long while that Friday was a good day to move releases to, even before the change came in. I'm sure back in the late 80's or whenever it was decided to make release day a Monday came in that it was an alien concept then.

I guess what I'm trying to say is change is inevitable. Will it be annoying for the industry at first? Yes, but they'll settle in, as they did with downloads coming in, streaming coming in etc.

Whilst this makes sense from a music industry point of view, this is bad news for the Chart Show.

It's extremely unlikely that Radio 1 are going to do a 3 hour chart show on a Friday in the "Drivetime" slot. And if they shove it to later in the evening, they'd probably condense it down to an hour or two.

I wouldn't actually mind if they reduced it two hours actually - it always used to be until the late 80s/early 90s? They could just skip some of the old stuff, or cut the songs down. I really like the way they do the Swedish top 40 show in 2 hours like this. But it'll be really sad not to have the show on Sunday afternoon - the end of an era!

I suppose it's *possible* that they'll announce the chart on a Friday but keep the Chart Show on Sunday anyway - they used to do this of course back when the charts were announced on a Tuesday. But with less interest in the chart, and it being so slow these days, there'd be no point in taking 3 hours to announce a chart which is already announced.

It be most likely the chart update will get moved from Wednesday to Friday, with the full show on Sundays, that would be the most logical thing to do. Back in the 80s a similar situation was done on Tuesday evenings, as I remember Peter Powell announcing the chart.

As Ben pointed out above, a 2 hour condensed chart show would be sufficient on a Friday between 6pm to 8pm, next best thing, but it be sad to see the chart show not announced on a Sunday, just have to wait and see what Radio 1 are planning to accommodate the move.

One possible compromise could be a one-hour show on a Friday (6 to 7 perhaps) and then a full rundown on Sunday.
