The BBC TV quiz show. This is not a wind up thread. I genuinely don't understand it. Can anyone explain it to me. What is a POINTLESS answer, is it one that they haven't thought of or that the public didn't think of or what? Why does a low score seem to be a good score? blink.gif Please someone help as it's driving me mad. I saw last night's celeb one and haven't ever seen it before. My wife says I must be thick as she says she understands it but won't explain it to me. Seems very complicated rolleyes.gif

Isn't it explained at the beginning of every episode? tongue.gif

The show's producers give 100 people 100 seconds to name as many answers to the questions as possible, the aim for contestants is to pick the most obscure correct answer possible which would be one none of the 100 in the sample said. One point is scored for each person in the sample who named that answer, so the aim is to score 0 points (i.e. get a pointless answer).

They ask 100 people each of the questions used on the show. The number of people who gave the answer gives the score for the question. The aim of the game is to score as few points as possible, i.e. get the most obscure (or, by implication, most difficult) answer. That is why a low score is a good score.

For example, if the 100 people are asked to list as many words beginning with 'se' as they could (in 100 seconds), you would expect most of them to include the word set. However, very few would come up with one of my favourite words, sesquipedalian.

or "name a tree" and I'd go for metasequoia glyptostroboides - not a lot of people know my favourite tree name laugh.gif

(it's a deciduous conifer missing link on show in Bournemouth Central Gardens)

It's all about finding the answer that nobody else or in some cases the fewest have said.

i do find it pretty weird that if you score the maximum amount of points you're thrown off the show

scoring 0 points in this case is a good thing.

weird!
