Yvette Cooper's biggest obstacle was her husband's ambition. That isn't the case any more.

The entire North of England has been spooked by UKIP. Andy Burnham is a quick fix for that and, with a bit of work, the best candidate full stop.

Everything tells me that it's got to be Andy Burnham, which makes me think that Labour won't select him.

Andy Burnham. Anyone else is a vote loser for ukip challenged Labour areas.

Someone that's not a career politician middle upper class with actual experience of working with and talking to real people would be good.

Andy Burnham. Doesn't matter though as I bet Tories increase their majority in 2020 with Boris as leader. wink.gif

He has never had a job outside of politics. However, he does have the advantage of speaking with a regional accent.

Yes. It was more of an alternative wish fulfillment comment. I noted a 20 year old elected snp candidate and marvelled at what must be a truly amazing depth of actual work experience she can bring to the job as opposed to just cut n pasting other people's opinions off the net...

Still better paid than Tesco checkout I guess so it's a canny personal career move

It has to be Andy Burnham, with Yvette Cooper as deputy/shadow chancellor.

Chuka Umunna...ugh. He'd take Labour even closer to the Tories on policies (i.e. to the position of Clegg's Lib Dems who just got annihilated even worse than Labour), and send Northern England the same way as Scotland for Labour.

They need someone from the new generation of Labour, none of the old timers like Yvette Cooper or Andy Burnham.

My money is on Chuka Umunna or Liz Kendall (my personal preference).

Dan Jarvis, the MP for my home town of Barnsley is apparently being mentioned a lot by people on Twitter. New face, ex soldier, wife died of cancer.

Agreed. I think it's time they gave Harriet Harman a go. She's been deputy leader long enough. Boris v Harriet in 2020.

Dunno, he doesn't seem very charismatic from the couple of times I've seen him.

What has his wife dying of cancer got to do with anything?

Well it's being said that the nasty Tory press can't dish out any dirt on an ex soldier who's been through a tragedy can it?

Dan Jarvis is mainly hyped up by people who know about him rather than those who know him well. Hes good, but he's not a party leader. If we were going to go for someone from the 2010 intake I wouldn't want anyone but Stella but she's not popular enough with the PLP.
