Britney's last solo UK number 1!

QUOTE
By Justin Myers

2004 was a good year to be Britney Spears. She was at the top of her game and putting out some of the best pop of her career.

Flushed with success thanks to certified banger Toxic, Britney decided one Number 1 a year simply wasn’t enough – she wanted another. And she got one!

Britney was taking no chances with Everytime – this subtle, simple ballad would need some serious oomph if it was going to reach the top. So what did Britney do? Why, she only went and made the most controversial video of her career, of course.

Starring the super-droolworthy movie star Stephen Dorff, Britney’s video for Everytime was a tiny peek into the world of what it might be like to be a star. The flashing cameras and incessant press attention of the video were almost foreshadowing Britney’s future – she would shortly become major tabloid fodder following her marriage to Kevin Federline in September 2004.

So why the big controversy over the vid? The original treatment for the video, which was overseen by swish director David LaChappelle, saw Britney struggle with the pressures of fame and commit suicide in the bath. Downer.

There was an outcry that Britney was in some way glamourising suicide – imagine the tweets if it happened now – so Britney wisely changed tack and instead landed a nasty wound on her head thanks to a paparazzo’s stray camera.

It all gets a bit dark from there to be honest, especially when Britney appears to drown. At the end, however, after a nice sprint down some hospital corridors – which you are definitely not allowed to do at the local general – Britney emerges from the water smiling. It had all been a dream! We think.

Everytime went straight in at Number 1 this week in 2004, giving former chart-topper Mario Winans even more to moan about as I Don’t Wanna Know slipped to Number 2, beaten by almost 20,000 sales. Everytime would be Britney’s last Number 1 for almost nine years – Scream & Shout finally did the biz for her in early 2013 thanks to will.i.am.

Everytime – which is grammatically incorrect but we are prepared to let it go as it’s a brilliant song – is Britney’s seventh bestselling single, with over 355,000 copies sold.

So Britney was taking a long hot soak at Number 1, but what was happening in the rest of the Top 10? Look no further – we have the answers.

The rest of the top 10...

02. Mario Winans - I Don't Wanna Know
03. 4-4-2 - Come On England
04. O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei
05. Kelis - Trick Me
06. Brandy feat. Kanye West - Talk About Our Love
07. Jessica Simpson - With You
08. Cassidy feat. R Kelly - Hotel
09. Razorlight - Golden Touch
10. Frankee - F.U.R.B

Well, the best song DEFINITELY won that battle! Haha. <3 Her greatest song of all time for me. wub.gif (Second to only 'Mr Brightside' ever!)

It's weird how In the Zone was her best era for singles success but the album only peaked at number 13.

I think that's because it bombed initially due to a mediocre lead single, 'Toxic' and 'Everytime' kept it steadily ticking over to a respectable total in the end.

In The Zone is her 3rd best selling studio album here too, thanks to those monster hits that is.

It was a huge shock when 'In The Zone' only debuted at #14! Pretty bad considering that Atomic Kitten & P!nk's albums managed to sell more in their 2nd weeks (and those albums were launched with singles that were less successful than 'Me Against The Music'). And as for G-Unit outselling her... 👀 Really not sure what went wrong. That was an odd week though... Kylie's album entering at #6 was deemed as a flop as well! 'In The Zone' had an underwhelming chart run at first as well: 14 37 51 59 65...

A pity that the album could only reach a new peak of #13... another curiosity, given the two huge #1 singles. The eventual sales for 'ITZ' are respectable, but considering the hits taken from it, on paper the album should have been a lot more successful in the UK. Oh well, at least it's her 3rd best selling studio album out of 8 (As ḇreakaway previously mentioned)!

Great track one of her all time best, I remember having that album for X-Mas along with Kylie's Body Language, Sugababes - Three, Blue - Guilty, Liberty X - Being Somebody, Atomic Kitten - Ladies Night and Pink - Try This.

Britney's was definitely the best out of the bunch, and also remember reading that "I Got That Boom, Boom" was gonna be the 2nd single, and actually I did like that track, and didn't really notice "Toxic" at first coz it was quite low down on the tracklisting. But gave it another listen and loved it, her best album ever.

People always moan about MATM because they expect a huge song featuring Madonna. It's a great song and far better than the overated Toxic.
