http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/16/technolo...yp=cur&_r=0

Just been reading the above article that the New York Times published over the weekend. I made a conscious decision last year to make sure I put more of my money into, and bought from local businesses and retailers on the high street, especially after HMV nearly went under the year before.

I still bought the occasional CD or book from their used and new for 1p if it was out of print, but now reading this has made me want to boycott Amazon once and for all. How any company, let alone one as giant as they can treat its own employees with such disregard for their human needs and wellbeing is - to put it bluntly - shocking.

I worked in an Amazon warehouse and still use Amazon exceedingly frequently.

I don't know what the culture is like on the corporate side but I got subsidised food at the warehouse and I wasn't even an Amazon employee! I worked for an agency who treated staff like f***ing shite. From what I saw and heard, those who then went on to be hired by Amazon were well treated, had plenty of opportunities to learn and advance and were paid well.

From what I have witnessed at one of their largest eu distribution centres the company itself was great to work for. It's the agencies they use for casual staff that are pure evil.

Christ that article made me want to have an anxiety attack. I mean, before reading it, my desire of going into tech was trumped only by my desire to be suddenly swallowed up by a fiery pit, but still.

It's interesting getting perspective from someone as yourself who did work for them. Recent reports I saw even before this stated that was a common thing, particularly the one the article mentioned about ambulances on standby for staff literally ready to collapse.

I feel the ruthlessness of it all in the great pursuit of absolute domination of the market is just something that's unrealistic, and a dangerous culture to be inflicting upon any workers, whether they're comfortable with it or not. That's got to take a toll on anyone mentally after a while.

I try to use them as infrequently as possible and buy from actual shops like HMV instead when the price differential is piddling. Rather spend a pound or two more and support a business with actual business rates being paid, and staff working in the shop, and no tax dodging schemes.
