Sometimes politicians say things that are so utterly bizarre that you have to re-read what they said several times to see if you misinterpreted it. The latest example comes from Tory MP Jesse Norman. He said something earlier this week that has been interpreted as an allegation that Paula Radcliffe has used performance-enhancing drugs. However, that is not the point of this post.

When questioned about his comments, Norman had this to say

I certainly massively admire Paula Radcliffe, I grew up on tales of her extraordinary exploits in the 90s and early 2000s,

That conjures up images of Norman sitting on his father's knee listening to tales of this remarkable woman. Quite why he didn't just watch her performances on television is a separate matter. The really bizarre thing is that Jesse Norman is 53. Therefore, at the time he talked about, the time when he was "growing up", he was in his late thirties / early forties.

Norman is a Jesse. Perhaps he was talking emotionally. A lot of Tory MP's still haven't developed emotionally. Or intellectually. Or morally. Or generally.
