Anyone been? Daughter's going for 3 nights, 4 days on Sat. with some other girls from uni. Any advice as to what to see and also nice places to eat that aren't going to cost the earth? Also, any areas, streets they need to avoid?

Any tips would be most welcome as we don't know anyone who's ever been and none of her friends do either. Ta.

If she likes garlic, I can recommend the Garlic Queen restaurant.

not really any streets to avoid, those are the ones everyone heads for to have a nosey gander - they involve ladies in windows ohmy.gif

best advise her to avoid some of the "shows" though, very very naughty! More importantly advise her to have eyes in the back of her head for oncoming trams and bikes....!

Tell her to visit De Dam and the Nieuwendijk (a lovely shopping street).

I'm used to bikes too, but that there is on a whole other level. You have to be f***ing a warrior to ride bike there.

Tell her to get a bike. The streets are so flat and, coming from a self-professed non cyclist, it's an EXCELLENT ADVENTURE.

There are other things to do but considering it's your daughter I think it's best I keep it PG FRIENDLY.

I had my closest near death experience about 3 years ago when I went for the first time, I was a couple of seconds away from being mowed over by a tram!

I've been 3 times. It's a great city - definitely would recommend renting a bike, as they're cool, but tell her to be careful as thieves will go for them no matter how shit they look.

You've gotta tell her to go through the Red Light District as well, it's unlike anything you'll ever seen. It's perfectly safe down there as long as you're careful.

Amsterdam sign, Heineken factory and Anne Frank's house all should be ticked off.

The street performance acts can be very good if you're there at the right time too. Although probably not much different to any of the major European hotspots.
