Lonelady, new at 35 with “Silvering” this week.

Returning to the top spot for the first time since November 2014 Tahliah Barnett, aka FKA twigs, climbs 3-1 with “In Time” - the 2nd single to taken from her most recent EP entitled Melissa (though stylised as M3LL155X). It therefore becomes her third number 1 single in little over 12 months following 2014 chart toppers “Video Girl” and “Two Weeks” which both spent 2 weeks at #1 in November and August respectively, and she joins Jessie Ware and Florence + The Machine to become the 3rd British female solo artist to score a hat-trick of number ones. She also therefore displaces the previous chart champ Carly Rae Jepsen, who had notched up a fortnight in pole position with the second single from her new album E•MO•TION; “Run Away With Me” slips 1-3 however as it is also overtaken by French electronic musician Jean-Baptiste de Laubier, otherwise known as Para One. His new single, the addictive “Elevation” (with backing vocals provided by the South African Youth Choir) jumps 5-2 in its seventh frame.

Racking up her third Top 5 hit of the year, the prolific Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett charges 10-5 with “Nobody Really Cares If You Don't Go To The Party” - the singers ode to making-an-excuse-to-not-go-out and it follows the brilliant “Pedestrian at Best” which hit #3 in March and “Dead Fox” which was a number 5 hit in June. There are two entries into this weeks fairly becalmed Top 10 and they come from two veteran groups. Deerhunter were last in the Top 10 5 years ago back in October 2010 with the amazing “Revival” which was hugely successful and spent a couple of weeks at No.1. “Snakeskin” (which leaps 12-7) is the lead single from their seventh studio LP Fading Frontier which is due to be released on 16 October. Also new to the penthouse are Mercury Rev - who last hit the Top 10 almost fourteen(!) years ago with “The Dark Is Rising” which spent a single week at No. 1 in February 2002; the new single from their forthcoming eighth LP The Light In You - “Are You Ready?” jumps five to #9 this week.

There are six new entries to the chart - the highest at 35 for Julie Ann Campbell - Manchester musician known by the name Lonelady. “Silvering” percussively sounds a little like Foals circa 2007 and is filled with wonderful dreamy pop vocals. The single is taken from her second album Hinterland which was released earlier this year. Returning to the chart are Newcastle’s Lanterns On The Lake - debuting at #37 “Faultlines” is a beautiful song which describes the protagonists contempt for austerity - it is taken from their forthcoming third LP Beings due in November. Further entries come from ZHU and AlunaGeorge (“Automatic” at No.41), New Order (“Plastic” at 46), Oneohtrix Point Never (“I Bite Through It” at 47) and Battles (“The Yabba”) at 49.

Chart follows....
