From June 2017, the EU has opted to end all roaming charges in the EU.

So this includes data, phone and text charges.

But of course, there is a chance we might not even be in the EU come 2017!

This isn't news though right? I thought this was decided quite a while ago.

good! Better stay in the EU cos the charges will get ridiculous - last time I was in Florida I got charged 50p per text without being warned/informed till all my credit suddenly went. I thought that sounded illegal so gave my provider an ultimatum: give me cash back or I change to another provider. Got refunded....

always worth complaining...and the EU, contrary to popular opinion, looks after consumers in a way national governments don't always.

I went to Madeira island recently, i had a little wifi router locked to the 3 network in Ireland, I managed to unlock it for free on the internet, took it away with me to Madeira.

I then purchased a Data sim card locally for €10 that was an allowance 10 gb for 1 month, I must have used over 2gb in a week as i was using wifi for navigation in partnership with my smartphone.

If I used my roaming to do the same, it would have cost me over €600

I used to have the same when I lived in St Margarets-at-Cliffe near Dover, my phone used to roam on to a French network regularly in certian parts of the village

I'm quite lucky in that I'm on 3 so in a few countries I don't actually have roaming charges and can use my normal allowance. It's a god send.

I'm really looking forwards to a ban on roaming charges in the EU. We're such a small continent with so many countries it just makes sense to free telecoms in the same way that we've freed movement of goods and people.
