Hi cheer.gif

I have been involved in countless discussions about pronunciation etc. over the past few months and decided that it's about time there was a thread for this. (Funnily enough I thought the word "pronunciation" was spelt "pronounciation", but apparently not?)

((I also hate the spelt/spelled, learnt/learned thing))

- I used to pronounce "nougat" as "nugget", but was recently corrected and found out it is indeed "noo gaa" kink.gif
- I assumed Halsey was pronounced "hal-see" when it is in fact "hall-see", illusions were completely shattered
- Dena pronounced her name as "deh-na" in a video, which was always what I thought it to be, even though some people kept calling her "dee-na"
- My name is not mat-eye-us
- "screenshits" was a typo of mine on plug.dj for "screenshots" and now I can't help using it every time
- Pot noodle has become "Poot noodle"
- The Irish name Caoimhe is pronounced "kweeva" tongue.gif
- When do the c*cks go forward again? unsure.gif

I could probably put a million other things in here (and might once more things come to me) but now it's your turn! Put anything related to pronunciation, spelling and amusing typos in here!

Both are OK. In a formal piece of writing, the only important thing is to be consistent, i.e. don't spell it -ise in some places and -ize in others. There is a common perception that -ize is American and -ise is British. This is not true, although it is true that Americans tend to use the -ize spelling more than Britons.

The most annoying typos are the various attempts of spelling "definitely". The worst offender being "defiantly".

That's what happens when you try to apply logic to English spelling laugh.gif

I've seen a couple angry tweets recently where people have been putting big emphasis on a certain word with capital letters and then they spell it wrong laugh.gif

Some Irish people pronounce "definitely" as "defi-nightly" and I haven't figured out whether it is genuine or some joke huh.gif

My housemate says "generally" instead of "genuinely" every single time and it pisses me off insanely. At the point now where I can't even correct her. :/

That makes me want to pull my weave out. "I could care less" is also annoying as what they really mean is "I couldn't care less".

Ugh, that's like "I haven't done nuffin'!!!" when it should be "I haven't done anything".

I actually saw a piece in my local paper where a journalist had done this cry.gif

For some strange reason, Americans say "I could care less". The only explanation I can think of is that they mean "I could care even less if I made a real effort, but I can't be bothered".

"He done a very good job" huh.gif

I used "had done", which is correct. I could also have said "did".

"He had done a very good job" and "He did a very good job" are both correct although they mean slightly different things.

This is never going to stop is it laugh.gif laugh.gif

Try to remember the syllable Sen rhymes with Tence that would be a good way of remembering it I think.
I hate the restaurant one too laugh.gif I think it's French or something, try remembering it as Rest au rant wink.gif

Guilty of Definitely also (despite knowing full well that there's no a in it sleep.gif )

I'm also guilty of should of blush.gif but when I don't do that I do should've instead magic.gif

Espresso is also a habit. Perhaps if I liked drinking it I'd get out of the habit heehee.gif
