It was touched on in the rate with Like a Virgin-gate. Madonna is an artist with many, many well known hits, but what are her most definitive?

I'd say her FOUR most definitive are;

1) Like a Prayer
2) Like a Virgin
3) Vogue (Which I feel is becoming more and more iconic in this generation, if that makes any sense?)
4) Material Girl

With Get into the Grove and Material Girl bubbling under these four...

What are all your opinions?

I think Hung Up much as I hate it, if becoming pretty iconic for being such a big comeback for her, maybe Frozen too?

In terms of something of hers being ICONIC then it has to be Vogue. It's got the dance routine, it's named after THE publication for style and icons, I'd say it doesn't really sound like anything else ever recorded... and above all else it's a song about iconic legends and well and truly helped her on her way to becoming an equal with all the people she lists.

Like A Prayer and Hung Up are the two I'd say the most! Like A Prayer I hear on the radio often and is one of the tracks I always hear people say that define Madonna from them. And I think Hung Up also, especially for the younger generation- for example Hung Up was the first song I heard by Madonna and knew it was her and I remember it always being on MTV and the other music channels!

Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Vogue and Music (again for the reasons I gave Hung Up) would complete my top 6 (don't know which one would be 6th though!)! (then I'd say Frozen and Holiday and that's as far as I'm going to go!)

Not at all, it just means you're probably best going to see a doctor about your hearing problems.

On topic though: I'd say it's almost definitely Like A Prayer or Vogue, that period was her absolute zenith as a star and both songs are so ubiquitous and well known by almost everyone aware of any aspect of popular culture that it's hard to view them as anything other than pivotal moments in her career. Like A Prayer properly announced her as much more than a pretty singer, singing nice songs (I know a few singles had done it prior to that point, but none so effortlessly and effectively) and Vogue cemented her status as someone able to create a pop masterpiece with relative ease.

I can see cases for various others: Holiday being the one that really launched her, Like A Virgin/Material Girl for cementing her as more than a one hit wonder and Material Girl in particular setting up a template/persona for her going forward. Hung Up painted her as the comeback queen, but much as I love it and much as it was a huge moment for her, I don't think it truly DEFINES her career.

All other female artist started wearing leotards in videos and live music videos after hung up !!

I agree. Madonna has many songs that are well-known or career-defining but it's 'Vogue' and 'Like a Prayer' that would be regarded iconic. 'Vogue' for the reasons you've given and 'Like a Prayer' for the video and the controversy it spurred, the Pepsi ad, the blend of pop and religious music, the lyrical content etc. etc.

Other hugely well-known songs would be 'Holiday', 'Like a Virgin', 'Material Girl' and 'Hung Up'.

Then there's others which are also well known but slightly less so than the above, like 'Into the Groove' and 'La Isla Bonita'. I'd also argue 'Express Yourself' (this feels so much bigger than its chart performance indicates, even long before 'Born This Way' came about), 'Justify My Love' (more for the video), 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' (given Evita is so huge and this seems to be the go to song for that musical), 'Ray of Light' (perhaps I'm thinking too subjectively, but I remember this always being on during the early 00s when I was a kid and I think a lot of people know "Anna Frieeeeeel") and 'Music' (similar to 'Ray of Light' and the fact it was her millennium comeback/reinvention and her first (and successful) attempt of being on par with younger, popular pop artists).

'Frozen' is an odd one for me. It makes me think of Kylie's 'Confide in Me' in the sense that both are comebacks with a musical sound no-one could really expect from either artists and both are hugely celebrated among fans, however neither strike me as being that well-known with the public. 'Frozen' is always played on the TV music channels but I've never heard it mentioned/used in popular culture or referred to by people who grew up with it.

I would say it's without a DOUBT 'Like A Prayer' with 'Vogue' second and the only one offering competition. It's the song I regularly hear out in clubs (gay and straight), it's featured in pub quizzes i've been in, all my friends select it when they want to play a Madonna song for me and that's ignoring the gigantic impact it had on the time. It truly is an iconic song in every single way. I'd say 'Vogue' comes close but nothing else of hers does. 'Like A Prayer' will be the big song she is always remembered for I think long after she is done.

After those two it's quite a big gap but then i'd put the duo of 'Material Girl' and 'Like A Virgin'.

Songs like 'Frozen', 'Hung Up' et al are huge and popular but I don't think they're iconic and define her career. 'Hung Up' also has the massive feature to thank so musically it's not even TOTALLY her so i'd struggle to say it defines her as an artist too much (if that makes sense).

STILL she has many iconic songs but 'Like A Prayer' stands way above the rest based on my own experiences of Madonna in the real world and the online fandom too ~

I think if you were to go up to a heavy metal fan who has no time for commercial music and ask them to name a Madonna song, 'Like a Prayer' would be the one they'd mention.

We had this debate in the office today, and most people were torn between Like a Virgin and Like a Prayer, a couple of younger people saying Hung Up (wrongly).

I took to Twitter to ask
and it was mostly Like a Virgin and Like a Prayer with a couple of people saying Vogue. So I opened it out into a poll and the results are so far Like a Virgin - 38%, Like a Prayer 36% and Vogue 26%.

I do personally think it's probably correct in that Like a Virgin and Like a Prayer are equally as iconic and some of you have underestimated Virgin's power. Though Prayer is so much better, I feel like Virgin is her most referenced in pop culture.

Objectively speaking it's definitely 'Like A Prayer', I always ask people what their favourite Madonna song is or the one they associate with her and that comes up more often than not. 'Vogue' second, 'Like A Virgin' third.

It helps that 'Like a Prayer' is much more 'cooler' to like than 'Vogue' and 'Like a Virgin'. Wasn't 'Like a Prayer' used in wrestling, for instance?

The three essentials are "Like A Virgin", "Like A Prayer" and "Vogue". I guess "Express Yourself" and one of "Open Your Heart", "Music", "Material Girl" or "Hung Up" would be behind them, but those are like the holy trinity of Madonna songs that were most known.
