Stephen Fry chose his words very very poorly when speaking about sexual abuse. He could scarcely have been less sensitive to victims when he tells them to "grow up" and quit with the "self pity".

Considering he must surely have had people term his mental illness "self pity" he should really understand the complexity of these matters.

He doesn't really become offensively callous until the last few minutes.

He needs to do a lot of apologising to come back from this.

i just have to look at this thread and yawn.

really don't like the guy, especially when he's doing QI- that show bores the hell out of me

he just never shows much emotion towards anything. everything is in 1 tone or when he does it he sounds like he'd rather be doing something else

don't like him

Oh, I have always found him to be compelling viewing.

I heard cries of "but it's been taken out of context". Yes it was but if you're a victim of sexual abuse who is trying hard to live with what happened you dont need to be told to "grow up" or to quit with "self pity".

He may have had one type of person in his mind when he said that - oversensitive students at certain American Universities but he reached further than that with his dangerously thoughtless words.

I think I remember a thread about him being called out for another incident like this (it might have been homophobic comments or something or I'm confusing with someone else)

As for a QI presenter I thought he was alright (QI was a great show when I watched it, both interesting and funny biggrin.gif) this incident is a mess tho :|

Oh and when I was listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks I thought he was good at that too.

EDIT: No, totally wrong laugh.gif

Well, he was asked an honest question in that interview and gave an honest answer - what would you say to God?

He didn't tell anyone to grow up - he didn't tell the people who believed in God that they were stupid or culpable for the wrong doings (things he could well have gone as far as saying). He just summarised the rant that he would have if he met the God of Christian culture.
