Dance Chart Number 1s 2000 - 2010

Well this is like the 1990 to 1999 Dance Chart Number 1's but for the 2000s.

The rules are that the song must be the top dance song/tune for the week on The Official Charts Top 40 rather than using the Official Charts dance Chart Number 1 which can be inaccurate for some reason.

Lets start with

Re-Rewind - The Crowd Say Bo Selecta by Artful Dodger ft Craig David

An array of interesting sound effects in this one. Breaking glass, cars screeching and of course that squelching sound 'Craig David all over your *squelch*'. I assume it covers up an assumed swear word although I don't know.

Of course this is the song that launched Craig David as a musical force and arguably UK Garage into the mainstream although there were a few UK Garage hit songs like 'Sweet Like Chocolate' by Shanks and Bigfoot before this.

Of course it was the inspiration for the name of the hit comedy show 'Bo Selecta' where comedian Leigh Francis had a spoof Craig David type character. Leigh Francis now goes by the name Keith Lemon in his comedy programmes.

Artful Dodger are from Southampton and got their name from a character in Oliver Twist because they were making so many bootlegs in the early days of their career. Craig David is also from the city, so this is a Saints special. teresa.gif He later had a hit 'When The Bassline Drops' in 2015 which made subtle references to this song in the lyrics.

Top 40 chart run 2-2-6-5-3-2-3-7-11-17-21-29-34

Is this basically an extension of the thread in the chart forum? If so, it would be good to have the same stats that were in the other one. i.e. which weeks it was #1 for and the top sellers of the year etc.

Yes well he asked me if I was interested in working on it and I said I was.

I am looking forward to doing this and I am sure Colm and others will help out. If anyone wants to post the next dance number one to a better style I will copy it.

Yes Dobbo it is his best song, but I never really liked UK Garage originally I found it a bit sad sounding the guitar bits in it.

The style is quite similar... if you look at the posts in Colm's thread (like this one: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=5424132 ) then you'll see that they specify the weeks that the song was at #1 in the dance chart for. It's not a big change but it's interesting to see to give extra context.

Good luck with the thread. happy.gif

I've got a list already, as for Artful Dodger he would have been #1 for three weeks (...3-2-3...) though this isn't counting the weeks in 1999 he was #1 for.

Because of You - Scanty Sandwich

Number 1 on the dance chart week beginning 23rd January 2000 and 30th January 2000. Top 40 chart run 3-7-16-23-35

This is the first new Dance Chart number 1 of the millennium. Scanty Sandwich's real name is Richard Marshall and he is a London based DJ who goes by a variety of guises. The sound, a mix of disco house (a thumbs up from me for this wink.gif ) and rock influences is obviously similar to that of Fatboy Slim's most famous records, and it is no surprise that he was signed to Fatboy Slim's record label Southern Fried. I don't know why he is called Scanty Sandwich, although it is undoubtedly a great stage name. I never really knew this record, although I did hear it on a minor radio station recently.

The song was originally called Jacko On Acid before it was changed to Because of You probably to avoid offending any global pop stars enough to attract a lawsuit for defamation. It samples Michael Jackson's interestingly titled Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day, a cover of a 1968 Stevie Wonder song which appeared on Jackson's 1972 album Ben.

Adelante - Sash!

Number 1 on The Dance Chart 6th February 2000. Top 40 chart run 2-4-8-16-28-36.

The first trance dance chart number 1 of the millennium, it is also the first non - English language dance chart number 1 of the new millennium. The song is in Spanish and Adelante means 'ahead' in English. Sash! are a German DJ duo who had already had several big hits in the late 1990's, probably the most famous of these is their 1998 collaboration with Tina Cousins, Mysterious Times. The video showcases presumably one member of Sash's enviable ability to play two keyboards at once.

Another thing I noticed by listening to the song, which I have never heard before is that the song is trance but has possibly Spanish inspired accordion-esque synths in it and similar woodwind-ish sounds in it in the background to Fly On The Wings of Love.

Dance songs were now coming thick and fast in 2000 after the Christmas break and that is probably why there was only one week at number 1 on the Dance Singles chart for this song.

You would never get a song like that these days anywhere near the top 40.

Hi all,

I wasn't aware that this thread was going to be started. I had planned to arrange it with a few others.

I would wish that it is continued in the style that myself and Doctor Blind established in the chart forum - and also that it would be posted in the chart forum. I'm in negotiations with DanG and others to set this up properly as there's some work to be done before it can get going if it is to work smoothly.

Obviously this is not my decision but it would be great if this thread was put on hold until we're all on the same page.

Ah. That's a shame and also not a shame at the same time, although it will be good to follow the same excellent style that the first thread had.

Oh I'm sure it will!

Will TAFKATheSnake be involved still? It's good to see him channel his enthusiasm for the site into something more positive and aligned with what members of the site enjoy reading.

Can we not just move this thread to the chart forum. I can change the style of the entries but these are the legitimate first three entries to the chart. I checked the charts myself and no other dance songs are higher than these on the weeks described. I put some work into researching these songs and dont want it to go to waste. People have took time to post comments on here too there is no need to start a new thread.

I would expect so. I don't want to stifle anyone's enthusiasm.
