This is a music discussion forum. I am just wonder if there is ever a chance of getting in trouble with the law/getting sued for defamation as a result of making comments on sites like Buzzjack about musical quality of a song. Obvs. I know homophobia, sexism, racism can get you in trouble and I agree with those three, I am just talking about musical quality.

Sorry about the wrong forum

What about saying a song sounds like/copied another song, that probably would be more within the rules of defamation....

It wouldn't surprise me if that ends up being a crime in the near future given how f***ed the legal system is already esp. in America.

One of the reasons music is created is for people to interpret it so I don't see why anyone should be punished for criticising a song. I feel like laughing even giving this though. laugh.gif

In regards to saying a song sounds like/is copying another, surely it would be whoever created the song that would be more likely to be in trouble rather than whoever points it out?

No, but it's morally wrong to criticise any Dido song.

It is not a crime to criticise a song I believe as it is just your own opinion, we all have opinions, so if someone says song is 'OMG AMAZING' or 'OMG So Awful' its just a opinion at the end of the day, I don't think Musicians will be butthurt over negative opinions on their music.

I think there is a big difference between criticising and making hate comments. Criticising is just a negative opinion on something (for example, I don't like the song because the production is bad, or because the singer sings good, is cheap etc) whilst hate comments are just expressing hatred towards something that has no real explanation behind it and with that insulting the person.
Although it must be said criticising can go also wrong with exaggeration.

Homophobia, sexism and racism are not opinions (at least in my eyes) but insults, violence and deliberate attack on the person.

I suppose if you're directly criticising the motives and meanings of a certain song (for example saying the lyrics to Macklemore's 'Same Love' were idiotic and wrong) that could get you into trouble.

I don't think that's wrong, of course people can disagree with it but I wouldn't say it would get you in trouble. But saying "it's about stupid f*gs", not that is an insult and homophobia.

Yeah this touches on the subject about internet trolls. People who hate on things just for the sake of it, if they are unable to produce a reason as to why they hate something they are most likely a troll. I read something once about someone discussing the possibility of trolling on the internet to be a crime ohmy.gif idk the details tho or if it went beyond simply discussing the idea.
