I have spent a bit of time reading I Wish Someone Were Waiting For Me Somewhere by Anna Gavalda, published in 1999.

Sounds like a romantic story about a lonely woman longing for love? It is anything but. It is a collection of 12 short stories, ranging from a woman being asked out by a total stranger, to a man discovering he has caused 9 people to die by reversing on the A13 autoroute at the Bourg-Achard exit, to two youngsters taking the father's car to impress girls, running over a boar with it, taking the dead boar with them, only to discover the boar isn't dead, and the boar being blown up inside the car.

However, all of that pales in comparaison to the charming Catgut short story, where a veterinary physician is raped and, ahem, uses her knowledge of castration and anesthesia in order to exact revenge on her rapists, transplanting one's testicules to his chin. Described pretty graphically. Read the spoiler tags at your own risk.

So, in light of this read and the rather unpleasant images it has created, I want to ask: has any work of art you have read, watched, seen or listened to been deeply unsettling? Share your examples, but do remember to wrap them in spoiler tags. Not everyone wants to have bad dreams tonight.

I won't be able to sleep if I listen to The Beatles - 'Revolution 9' at nighttime. The distortedness gives me the creeps so much.

Whilst I'd like to say that I've reached the point in my life where I am unable to be traumatised by films, TV shows, etc, there's still some that can leave me troubled. The last time it happened was when I saw the Bruce Willis time-travel Looper.

The sequence in question, the "Disappearing Fingers" section, really disturbed me. There was no real violence or gore seen, only implied, but it was enough to leave me somewhat troubled for days afterwards. Not an easy watch.

THE BOY IN STRIPED PYJAMAS

My grandmother picked it out as we all go to the movies as a family after Thanksgiving dinner. She thought it was an animated film that she saw in another preview. Fantastic movie. But, damn. The whole family was screaming in emotional distress by the end credits.
