What do you think of them? I mean they're EVERYWHERE - let's look at the current iTunes top 20 for example~

Clean Bandit - Rockabye (feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie)
NEIKED - Sexual (feat. Dyo)
Maroon 5 - Don't Wanna Know (feat. Kendrick Lamar)
Hailee Steinfeld & Grey - Starving (feat. Zedd)
Zara Larsson - I Would Like
Jonas Blue - By Your Side (feat. RAYE)
The Chainsmokers - Closer (feat. Halsey)
Fifth Harmony - That's My Girl

..that's a lot of tropical house.

So do you like the trend or do you just want it to go away?

Are Starving & Closer tropical house?

Yeah I like the genre, Alex Adair's Make Me Feel Better & Kygo's Firestone do it far better but I like elements of it in recent tracks, even when incorporated more subtly (like in Dua Lipa's Hotter Than Hell).

I was excited by it when it was initially coming into force because you had songs like 'Make Me Feel Better' and 'Firestone' that were actually INTERESTING and they sounded different. Now nearly every song feels like its read 'Tropical House for Beginners' and just uses this lazy, watered down production that all sounds the same. When it's even spreading to people like Gabrielle Aplin and Maroon 5, it means that there's no variety there. I don't know how anyone can be excited by a new tropical house song anymore because it's just another tiny variation on everything that has been heard this year. Same production, just a different vocal.

If people were being innovative with the sound and creating something that stands out like 'Make Me Feel Better' or incorporating (rather than letting it take over) it into a pop track like 'Hotter Than Hell', it wouldn't bother me but I'm so BORED of the sound now and I'm ready for the new trend to come in. It's all so lazy and uninteresting now.

(also 'That's My Girl' isn't tropical house, just pop)

I love tropical house but it is getting a lil boring having ALL the pop stars making watered down tropical pop coz it's trendy (see that lacklustre Maroon 5 song and even The Vamps jumping on the trend).

I always find with these dance trends the songs made by actual dance producers tend to be better although there have been some good tropical inspired pop songs like Hotter Than He'll and Cheap Thrills

That's My Girl is just brassy pop laugh.gif

As for this actual trend, I am fed up of it. I remember a couple of years ago me and Jake of the indie mod variety were stanning over Kygo remixes before he even released anything solo, and a few remixes like that. I really thought that tropical house would be great to have in the charts and something fresh, but now it's been totally rinsed. There are still great songs coming out it tbf like Rockabye (although to me that feels more like it's influenced a lot by 90s pop like Ace Of Base), Sexual and Starving listed above, but for every good song there are more hideous rehashes of old songs and generic uninspired lowest common denominator crap. Tropical house can quite easily be worked well into pop (Hotter Than Hell is a brilliant example) but just as easily you can have songs like the new Gabrielle Aplin one which I have to agree with posters above on is very meh. It's the same with any musical trend really, when it's used and abused in a lot of mediocre songs it wears off a lot.

That's My Girl is funky house influenced not tropical....

All Fired Up is trancepop not trance laugh.gif

I liked tropical house when Unicorn Kid first did it a couple of years before Kygo and his likes became popular (True Love Fantasy and Just Don't Open Your Eyes Yet) because it was fresh and I had never really heard it before.

Also Sunchyme, Love Generation, Rise Up (by Yves Larock), Stereo Love and Take Care I liked and those were tropical house songs long before the current trend.

Haven't liked it since Unicorn Kid tbh.

My favourite dance trend was the Shapeshifters style disco style revival production which tended to infuse a lot of songs during the mid 00s, even pop ones like Charlotte Church's Crazy Chick (which admittedly I wasn't a fan of). Also the massive sounding vocal trance production of 2002 (Kelly Llorenna etc) was great too. Both disco house and trance style production styles during the early/mid 00s are much more powerful than the rather dull flat tropical house production of now.

Why does something have to be infused? Why can't it just be pop. There is no funky house whatsoever in that song.

There is in the chorus I think.....the rest of it is more trap influenced (Jason Derulo Talk Dirty etc) I think.
