UK AIRPLAY ANALYSIS
BY ALAN JONES

Ed Sheeran dominates the radio airplay chart for the third week in a row – but Castle On The Hill and Shape Of You swap places, with the latter rising to the top after two weeks as runner-up to the former, which itself now descends to second place. Sheeran thus becomes the first person ever to replace himself at the top of the radio airplay chart in a very close run battle, which saw Shape Of You emerge with a 0.82% bigger reach.

Perhaps surprisingly, both register growth, with Shape Of You spurting 14.18% on plays (from 5,429 to 6,199) while increasing its audience 11.48% from 71.68m to 79.91m, and Castle On The Hill up 13.24% on plays (from 5,943 to 6,730) but only 2.34% on audience, which increases from 77.45m to 79.26m. Shape Of You had a top tally of 73 plays from 11 of the 13 stations in Bauer’s 3 Network, with the very same stations serving up Castle On The Hill’s top tally of 71 plays. Shape Of You wins Radio 1’s vote with 26 plays, compared to 18 for Castle On The Hill but Castle On The Hill wins the Radio 2 battle by 10 plays to eight.

Two records move into the Top 10 for the first time – and both are second chart entries by artists whose first was as a featured vocalist on a Jonas Blue hit last year. They are JP Cooper, whose September Song rises 11-8 and Raye, who is featured on Jax Jones’ You Don’t Know Me, which advances 14-9. September Song has a 9.15% increase in plays (up 400 to 4,773) which yields an 8.23% larger audience (50.11m compared to 46.30m) than a week ago. It was aired 27 times last week on Radio 1 – a total surpassed by only four other tracks – which provided a chunky 31.01% of its audience.

surprised that SOY has replaced COTH as #1, I've been hearing the latter a lot more on radio.

I'm the opposite as I hear SOY more than COTH.

I think it's because my parents listen to Radio X and Radio 2, both stations play COTH a lot. I think SOY is playlisted on R2 as well but Radio X have never played it.
