Do you ever make judgements on people regarding what music they must like because of how they dress, act or just even things about their personality or lifestyle? Has anyone ever made assumptions based on your taste? Why is it you think certain things have become stereotypical for certain fans of certain genres? For example, tattoos and piercings are often associated with punk music, dressing in all black is synonymous with emo/rock/ heavier music and so on...

It would be cool if you could mention a genre and then what you believe to be the stereotypes linked to it, what does a "typical" fan of that genre look like etc kink.gif

Stormzy

A typical fan of his will wear everything Nike. He will frequently wear Nike jackets, trousers, a cap and trainers. He will yell in the streets till 12am causing trouble. Basically, a chav.

I always assumed most chavs were fans of hardcore dance music rather than grime (although some grime is quite hard too), although that was probably more in the 00s (when hardcore was more around) than now.

Drum and bass is a big chav favourite though, I would imagine still biggrin.gif

I'm a lot more beige than my music taste might otherwise suggest.

Middle aged moms - radio 2/heart fm
Drug users/f***boys - generic EDM/grime
Middle age men - soft rock/blues
Kids - Disney/teen pop
Hipsters - indie/"real" music

Those stereotypes come to mind first..

I don't really tend to make assumptions of people's tastes unless they are literally wearing a band shirt or something haha. People can really surprise you with what they like. As for my own taste there was one judgement that comes to mind. I remember in school one girl being really shocked that I was listening to rap music and this slightly annoyed me 'cause why can't I like rap music?! That's probably why I'm not quick to judge, because I'd be a bit miffed if someone boxed my taste.

Harve's post also applies to me. kink.gif

Yeah I've had that, I played a few dance songs I like at pres and a friend's housemate was like "oh I'm surprised you like this, I thought you'd just like Lady Gaga and Britney Spears and stuff like that" drama.gif Instead of getting too snappy I just said "yeah I like a lot of music" laugh.gif

My best friend at uni has the same I've noticed, his fave music is generally sort of pop punk/emo ish so like All Time Low, Paramore, Mayday Parade etc., so people always go "don't let Matt play music at pres it'll all be emo shit!!1!!" but he'll gladly get his life when I play Loreen - Euphoria or Charlotte Church - Crazy Chick and pop classics like that laugh.gif

Crazy Chick kind of used the nu-disco production of dance at the time but for a pop song rather than dance, kind the equivalent of today's tropical infused pop. It is a good pop song, but it should have had more of a dance beat imo.
