The Oscars are still a little while away and these have been fun to look at in more detail so thought I'd continue with some of the smaller categories biggrin.gif

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The nominees are:
Hell or High Water Taylor Sheridan
La La Land Damien Chazelle
The Lobster Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou
Manchester by the Sea Kenneth Lonergan
20th Century Women Mike Mills

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

The nominees are:
Arrival Eric Heisserer from "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang
Fences August Wilson from Fences by August Wilson (posthumous nomination)
Hidden Figures Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi from Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
Lion Luke Davies from A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley and Larry Buttrose
Moonlight Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney from In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney

What do you think will win? Who would you like to win? How many of these have you seen so far? What actresses are you sad about missing the cut? Discuss anything you like!!

'La La Land' will surely win "Best Original Screenplay"? ohmy.gif Although I really wouldn't argue with 'The Lobster' getting a surprise win over it tbh. One of the most original films I've seen in my lifetime haha.

"Best Adapted Screenplay" I cannot call at all though. Part of me thinks 'Arrival' or 'Fences' will win that one, but it could just as easily be 'Moonlight'. in fact, the more I think about it, the more I think 'Moonlight' will actually win.

Seen 4/5 out of the original screenplay ones (not seen 20th Century Women yet due to it's limited release but I'm hoping to buy it on DVD or rent it later in the year). As Jonjo said, even though it is really unrealistic, I would love for The Lobster to win, it was definitely one of the most original films I've seen and I loved the social commentary on dating. If I had to place a bet, it would probably be on La La Land but I think Manchester by the Sea has a good chance too as the screenplay was hardly one of the highlights of the former film.

Seeing Hidden Figures and Fences on Sunday but even without seeing them, I don't think either really have a chance of winning here. After getting eight nominations, Arrival clearly has a lot of love from the Academy and this is probably its best chance at winning one of the bigger Oscars. Moonlight also has a great chance though as one of the front-runners in pretty much all of the categories and with the other two big contenders (Manchester by the Sea/La La Land) being in the other category, it would be my bet!

After seeing all of the adapted screenplay nominees, I'd like Arrival to win. I think Moonlight will win but I found Arrival much more thought-provoking and the script was a bit more fast-paced and interesting. I liked Hidden Figures the best but I don't think the screenplay was one of the better things about the film really.
