The Duke of Edinburgh is retiring from royal duties this autumn, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The decision was made by Prince Philip himself and is supported by the Queen, a palace spokesman said.

The duke, who turns 96 next month, will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August but will not accept new invitations.

The Queen "will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements", the palace said.

It seems the 'emergency meeting' this morning was about this, apparently he is still in good health but has chosen to retire because of his old age.

There was me thinking the announcement was going to be the Queen's conversion to Satanism.

At the age of 95, nearly 96, I'd like to see you undertake numerous public engagements, meaning you have to travel all over the country and the world.

Travelling around the world and getting fed by the tax payer is a piece of piss, anyone can do that.

Not at the age of 96 when you're fraile and lack energy. My Grandad is in his 90s and has a whole load of energy for his age but isn't really able to move beyond the area that he lives in because it would just completely wear him out and do more damage to his mobility.

It is exhausting to travel up and down the country with so many different engagements to be a part of. You cannot say that is a piece of piss for a 96 year old.

Well I'd love to be in his position in 68 years time, he's certainly not the average 96 year old!

Travelling always seems to be exhausting for me, so I can't imagine what it would be like for a 96 year old laugh.gif

You don't seem to be able to manage to appear happy and friendly in public so I'm sure you'd be as great at it as you may think.
