I was just shuffling my library and two songs in a row with production sampled from another song came on! So that inspired this thread, what songs do you like that sample other songs in them? Let's share some great music, maybe even make some discoveries and perhaps leave some of us responding in a "omg that had a sample in it??" way. Feel free to share bad examples of sampling too.

The two songs in question were:

Die Antwoord - Ugly Boy
Lady Sovereign - So Human

'So Human' samples the production of 'Close To Me' by The Cure (and it also uses some of the lyrics) and 'Ugly Boy' samples Aphex Twin's 'Ageispolis'. Both brilliant examples of when a sample can really work as the production of both of them is my favourite element!

Samples are hard to identify for the less popular songs, although I need to use letssampled to see what songs I have that sample others ohmy.gif

Allie X's Vintage seems to sample Never Gonna Give You Up which I noticed earlier rotf.gif

The ultimate example is "Sunchyme" by Dario G. It samples the brilliant, albeit rather downbeat "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy, and turns it into the life-affirming dance classic it is today.

For reference, here is the original -

Lady Sovereign - So Human

'So Human' samples the production of 'Close To Me' by The Cure (and it also uses some of the lyrics)

If I was being picky, I would point out that "So Human" is an interpolation rather than a sample, as it doesn't actually take pieces from the original song, just re-plays them and adds things to it. tongue.gif

Oh yes that is true, perhaps we can extend this thread to interpolations too.

Staying with the 90s, "In The Meantime" by Spacehog samples "Telephone & Rubber Band" by Penguin Cafe Orchestra (a song that those of us from the 90s might remember fondly, as it was used in adverts for One2One, the phone network that preceded T-Mobile). Like the best sampling, it doesn't rely solely on the sample, just uses it as a springboard for something greater -

Opus III had a Top 5 hit in February 1992 with “It’s A Fine Day” with a little help from Kirsty Hawkshaw (her father wrote the theme for Channel 4 News) who provided the vocals on the track.

Orbital then sampled, chopped up and reversed Kirsty’s vocals to create the hook in “Halcyon” - though this only made it to #37 in September 1992.

The song "Boadicea" is notable that it was sampled on THREE top 10 singles, including 2 #1s -

It was first sampled by The Fugees on "Ready or Not", and then was used again as the basis for Mario Winan's "I Don't Wanna Know", and them used again on the answer song to that, "You Should Really Know" by The Pirates. Not bad for a short instrumental only ever intended for a short lived BBC documentary about The Celts.

Ah yes, 2004 - the year of 'answer back' songs. The absolute nadir for modern music.

'You Should Really Know' wub.gif

That familiar Enya sample was used in this song that was recently sent to BJSC as well:

It certainly gets around a lot laugh.gif

---

My favourite song of all-time is 'Another Chance' by Roger Sanchez and that heavily samples part of Toto's 'I Won't Hold You Back' throughout.

One of the most notorious examples is "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve. It samples an orchestral version of The Rolling Stones' "The Last Time", and because The Verve were clumsy in obtaining the rights, 100% of the royalties for the song goes to Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. Although all that they took from the song was "a few bongos & a bell", according to Richard Ashcroft (the main hook was original to The Verve) -

pretty much every Notorious B.I.G song either uses a sample or was sampled

90's hip hop is pretty much the Mecca of sampling

This is why I need to stop falling behind whenever a large thread comes along in the chart forum! Great write-up, just listened to 'Life In A Northern Town' and it is a fantastic discovery (well I wasn't exactly going to hate it when I do really like 'Sunchyme'), very beautiful.
