http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-...s-a7796551.html

QUOTE
Several pedestrians have been injured after being hit by a van near a mosque in London.

Witnesses said the vehicle veered off the road into worshippers leaving prayers in Finsbury Park shortly after midnight.

Footage showed injured people motionless on the pavement as angry crowds surrounded a white man believed to be the driver.

This is so heavy hitting.

The media and the general tone of the debate over the last few years really has a lot to answer for, in both radicalising young Muslim men here at home to feel like they don't belong when they turn on the evening news, but also to radicalise and stir up hatred from other fractions of society against the normal Muslim man/woman.

Unfortunately events like this only shift the debate even further away than where it should be.

Also can we change the title to 'terrorist' attack? I feel like we have got to be vigilant about calling this exactly what it is.

EDIT: just saw this neither the London Bridge or Manchester threads on here had 'terrorist' in the title, so actually forget it. As long as we are consistent all round, then I am happy.

done

i've been absolutely disgusted by the media today. you're 100% right in that it's a terrorist attack but some papers labelling it otherwise is completely disgusting behaviour

The same happened with Jo Cox's murder - the right wing media portrayed him as mentally ill etc. rather than an act of terrorism.

The colour chart meme from last year after Jo Cox's murder springs to mind once again.

Personally, remembering the memory of the innocent man who was murdered at his place of worship is a little bit more important to me than the terminology of what to call the attack, but hey, each to their own. (Although FWIW, if the PM calls it a terrorist attack, then a terrorist attack is what it is).

Appalling to see hatred and murder yet again.

Re: "terrorism" I have a simple definition to offer. If the culprit is genuinely metally ill, and has a history of it, or is put into care afterwards because of it, then it's not terrorism. With intent pre-planned it's a terrorist hate crime, bar those who do it for financial gain (which is even more cold-blooded).

for me, the terminology is an important part of respecting the victims

I live walking distance from Finsbury Park and I saw the commotion last night when I was on my way back home after visiting my girlfriend. It was fucking mental! I've never seen so much chaos with my own eyes before, I saw some injured people lying on the ground being treated by paramedics and all of the roads in that area have been blocked. I was due to go there today for a training course but I had to cancel for today because of all the road closures.

There are quite a lot of Muslims in that area, mainly of Somalian or Eritrean decent. It's not the area with the largest population of Muslims in London though, Whitechapel in East London has a much larger population of Muslims than Finsbury Park so I'm surprised that this maniac targeted that area.

It's sickening hearing about this kind of news so often these days, it's becoming a weekly occurrence in the UK and mainly London now sad.gif

This is heartbreaking.

It is absolutely a terrorist attack. I've noticed this is getting a fraction of the media attention the other recent attacks got. It would be a completely different story if it was a Muslim attacking a church.

The reason it's got a "fraction of attention" from the media is because it's an active case, the suspect is in custody, so the media have to tread lightly as any "prejudicial" reporting could jeopardize the possibly of a successful conviction, and could see the case being thrown out.

And it's hardly been ignored, it's been the main story on BBC News Channel & website all day.

Agreed with BB - the coverage is different because the media don't want to jeopardise (or be in contempt of court) the impartiality of what will be a forthcoming court case.

That said, another really mindless and sickening terrorist attack. : (
