I've never seen a thread like this on here before (I think) but I was inspired by Facebook's 'On This Day' feature and I thought it'd be a nice addition to have on here - anniversaries of notable releases or events, births and deaths etc from the world of music. All are welcome to make their contributions to this thread!

I'll make a start with some very good ones...

On this day in music...17 years ago (14th August 2000)

The infamous 'Posh vs Posher' chart battle in the UK singles chart commenced, as Victoria Beckham released her solo debut outside the Spice Girls on the much hyped True Steppers' hit "Out of Your Mind", releasing the same week as the dance anthem of that year, "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" by Spiller with Sophie Ellis-Bextor. The latter went onto beat True Steppers and Victoria to the top by 25k copies, despite them having the midweek lead.

Happy birthday to:

Sarah Brightman (born on this day in 1960, 57 today. Former member of dance troupe Hot Gossip. Her biggest hit in the UK was 'Time to Say Goodbye', her duet with Andrea Bocelli that reached #2 in May 1997)

Ed Harcourt (born on this day in 1977, 40 today. His biggest hit in the UK is 'All of Your Days Will Be Blessed', which reached #35 in February 2003)

That was definitely a chart battle that had everyone talking and is still remembered today! Just wish the chart positions had been the other way around but I love both songs!

I love the Spice Girls but 'Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)' has always been the superior song from this chart battle for me, sorry Victoria. Excellent #1 single! wub.gif

Not following the charts back then but listening to music channels I heard more about the whole thing between how Out Of Your Mind and I Turn to You had performed in the charts and which one was better rather than the Spiller/Out Of Your Mind chart battle. I much preferred I Turn To You back then out of the two songs Spice Girls members were in in August 2000, I thought Out Of Your Mind was a bit of a mess back then, but I appreciate it now.

as the dance anthem of that year

That's arguable, there were lots of contenders for dance anthem of the year for 2000, that could be also Feels So Good by Sonique, Lady (Hear Me Tonight) by Modjo, Silence by Delerium ft Sarah McLachlan, One More Time by Daft Punk or Toca's Miracle by Fragma ft Coco amongst others.

I had already owned Groovejet for about a month before this battle due to it featuring on Now 46 before it's release. So many memories of the Summer that bridged primary and secondary school for me wub.gif

On this day in music...26 years ago (15th August 1991)

Paul Simon played a free concert in New York's Central Park - 750,000 people were in attendance. Here he is performing 'The Obvious Child' at that show:

Happy birthday to:

Joe Jonas (born on this day in 1989, 28 today. Formerly one third of the Jonas Brothers of course, also the lead singer of DNCE. His biggest hit in the UK is their 'Cake by the Ocean', a #4 hit in May 2016)

Ted Dwane (born on this day in 1984, 33 today. He is bassist with Mumford and Sons, their biggest hit is still the #12 hit 'I Will Wait' from October 2012)

Complete coincidence but I've just bought the physical of this from a charity shop!

I remember Groovejet being used in an Inbetweeners episode called "Xmas Party" (Will did not want the song to be played at the party)
I also remember seeing a 7-inch of Obvious Child at a Helen and Douglas Store. I didn't manage to get it, alas.

On this day in music...40 years ago (16th August 1977)

The king of rock 'n roll, Elvis Presley, died of a heart attack at the age of 42 in Memphis, Tennessee. 25 years later, in June 2002, thanks to the help of Dutch remixer JXL, his 1968 B-side 'A Little Less Conversation' became his 18th and final UK chart topper (save for the 2005 re-releases) - making him the artist with the most UK number ones to their name.

Happy birthday to:

Madonna (born on this day in 1958, 59 today. I really don't need to tell you who she is or what her biggest hits are, do I? Interestingly, where chart stats are concerned, as of August 2017 she holds 13 UK number one singles - the most for any female artist)

James J.T Taylor (born on this day in 1953, 64 today. Former lead singer with Kool and the Gang, their biggest hit in the UK was 'Joanna', a number 2 hit in March 1984)

Emily Strayer (born on this day in 1972, 45 today. She is the founding member of US country girl band The Dixie Chicks - their biggest UK hit to date is still their only one to reach the top 40 - July 1999's 'There's Your Trouble' which got to #26)

Vanessa Carlton (born on this day in 1980, 37 today. Biggest hit of course is still her debut 'A Thousand Miles', a worldwide smash in the summer of 2002, it peaked at #6 here in August that year)

The JXL reworking of 'A Little Less Conversation' is the best Elvis song I've heard. The numerous re-releases in 2005 (then again in 2007 as well? lmao) were annoying and clogged up the chart but this genius remix can stay, it's a great chart topper. wub.gif

RIP The King.

As a huge Elvis fan I agree it's good but nowhere near my fave by him.

My top 5 would be:

Kiss Me Quick
Moody Blue
Good Luck Charm
Kentucky Rain
Kissin' Cousins

On this day in music...47 years ago (17th August 1970)

Christine McVie joined the legendary Fleetwood Mac as their first ever female member. Here she is performing their song 'Songbird' live in concert:

Happy birthday to:

Kevin Rowland (born on this day in 1953, 64 today. Lead singer of Dexy's Midnight Runners, their biggest hit is their August 1982 UK #1 'Come on Eileen' which stayed there for four weeks)

Belinda Carlisle (born on this day in 1958, 59 today. Former lead singer of The Go Gos, then a solo artist - her biggest hit was her solo debut 'Heaven is a Place on Earth', a January 1988 chart topper)

Donnie Wahlberg (born on this day in 1969, 48 today. An actor and film producer these days, but of course will always be one fifth of US boyband New Kids on the Block, their biggest hit is still their November 1989 UK chart topper 'You Got It (The Right Stuff)')

Claire Richards (born on this day in 1977, 40 today. Lead singer of Steps of course, who returned with a new album earlier this year to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Their million selling double-a-side chart topper of 'Heartbeat / Tragedy' from November 1998 remains their biggest UK hit)

On this day in music...20 years ago today (18th August 1997)

All Saints released their debut single 'I Know Where It's At' in the UK. The track went onto debut and peak at #4, and started a career that has taken in five UK number one singles, two BRIT awards and 10 million album sales for Nicole, Melanie, Shaznay and Natalie.

Happy birthday to:

Everlast (born Erik Francis Schrody on this day in 1969, 48 today. The rapper, guitarist and songwriter's biggest hit is still his #37 hit 'What It's Like' from February 1999)

Tom Middleton (born on this day in 1971, 46 today. The DJ and producer has charted under numerous different aliases, but the most successful of these was as Cosmos, reaching #32 in October 2002 with 'Take Me With You')

I presumed that 'Never Ever' was their debut for years! Stumbled across 'I Know Where It's At' playing on Kisstory a few years ago and really liked it, one of my favourite singles by them.

I think that's true of a lot of people to be fair! It actually I believe holds the record for biggest number of singles sold before reaching number one - 750,000+ - although it did take 8 or 9 weeks for it to happen!
