I’ve been listening to Heart 90s radio, I’ve heard Wannabe 2x, Who Do You Think You Are 2x as well Say You’ll Be There, Stop and Spice Up Your Life.

They also played WYG and NBTSA, but as for the main UK radio stations they do get ignored rather a lot (group and solo)

I had a look at the overall radio plays for the last month in Switzerland was interesting to see some radio play occuring, some not bad radio play too!

Spice Girls:
Wannabe - 98 plays
Stop - 21 plays
Viva forever - 15 plays
Who do you think you are - 12 plays
Say you'll be there - 7 plays
2 become 1 - 7 plays
Mama - 7 plays
Spice up your life - 1 play
Too much - 1 play
Goodbye - 1 play
My strongest suit - 1 play

Lol at My strongest suit getting more plays than Holler or Let love lead the way!

Melanie C:
Never be the same again - 70 plays
When you're gone - 60 plays
First day of my life - 38 plays
I turn to you - 14 plays
The moment you believe - 10 plays
Next best superstar - 9 plays
Carolyna - 9 plays
If that were me - 2 plays
Think about it - 2 plays
On the horizon - 1 play

Emma:
What took you so long - 29 plays
We're not gonna sleep tonight - 1 play

Geri:
It's raining men - 11 plays
Mi chico latino - 4 plays

So

171 plays for Spice Girls
215 plays for Melanie C ohmy.gif
30 plays for Emma
20 plays for Geri
1 play for Victoria
0 plays for Mel B laugh.gif

I still can't at the fact that Melanie has been on the radio more than the group... although I suppose technically 60 of those plays count as Bryan Adams who is certainly more radio friendly than the girls, if you take those plays away that puts her at 155, which is still very close to the group!

Mel actually promoted a lot in Switzerland over the years, so it's not too much of an anomaly, I guess.

Thanks for the stats heart.gif

I've not clicked on the link but I'd assume a lot of those plays are on local independent radio stations that have very little listeners. I mean they are playing Geri album tracks that isn't exactly a go to song that your audience will know.

I still hear Never Be The Same Again, I Turn To You and What Took You So Long every now and then. I guess mainland Europe just isn't as averse to solo Spice as the UK in general.

I was looking through the sales again and I think the girls got a bit of a raw deal with Virgin tbh. Between them they sold just short of 8 million solo records in the UK during their time with Virgin (7,927,565)... I do think some of them should have been given more opportunity with the record label further, especially Emma and Melanie C. No wonder Mel is so angry with them, she sold the most records just short of half a million more than Geri.

All the girls first eras and Geri/Emma's second era definitely deserved better (sales wise)

I also think they got a raw deal for not having the opportunity to release more solo material in the United States.

TBH the raw deal they got from Virgin was probably because they f***ed up the group chances with their attitude towards Forever.

Once it became clear, for Virgin, that they were splitting up and not focusing on the group (which was what brought the cash in the first place), Virgin probably went 'meh, next'.

By the time their second (and Emma's first) era came about, Virgin was probably over them as artists, pissed off about their lack of interest in the bigger picture (and probably furious about how much money they spent on Forever that they didnt get back lol).

It makes sense to me, completely.

And technically, Virgin didnt give them a raw deal at all.

It is not common for ALL members of a group to be given solo deals to the high standard they were given. Victoria's solo album cost £5million to produce. They ALL worked with very expensive producers and had healthy campaigns That just doesnt happen, at all. In many more ways than one, their solo deals made them quite privileged, specially considering the amount of sales they managed to generate.

Perhaps Virgin was PISSED that once they got their solo deals, they pissed all over the group, which was the bigger money maker. I would be pissed too!

I'm sure Virgin would have been much more open to keeping Emma and Mel C on if they were still part of the group and bringing in cash from group projects too.

Yeah that is such a good point actually re the Virgin and Forever I really wouldn't be surprised if that is a huge reason why they gave up on them as solo artists quite quickly after they gave up on Forever in the drop of a hat... I do wonder whether Emma and Melanie would have been given a second chance had they committed to Forever properly, apparently Emma was offered something but she made the decision to walk as it wasn't a proper album campaign...

I agree that from Virgin's point of view the record company wouldn't have been too pleased with the way FOREVER was handled, I just meant that they deserved to have more of their singles released specifically in the U.S. - Never Be The Same Again, I Turn To You, I Want You Back etc

Also, it's the same issue with Simon Fuller, sometimes the girls didn't see further down the road or the bigger picture in terms of career choices made - it's a shame they didn't give more to the Forever era.

Absolutely - they all got post-album singles (sometimes several) from their less-than-stellar performing albums when a lot of labels probably would've just stopped throwing good money after bad once the numbers came in. I don't really think they got a "raw" deal as solo artists all things considered - it's easy to look at some of the sales from back then and think how relatively impressive they were, but sales and most of all budgets were higher. None of their solo albums came cheap.

Had they been willing to continue with the Spice Girls as a group they might've been willing to keep them on their rooster to make them happy (assuming Forever had been properly promoted and sold a lot more).
