A family staying on the 22nd floor of a Marriott Hotel in Miami found a pair of unlikely companions right outside their window. Two colorful parrots were pressed against it, avoiding the harsh winds of the storm as it continues to terrorize the Floridian metropolis.

This storm has wiped out Caribbean islands. Something like more than 90% of the buildings & infrastructure on Barbuda is damaged. The US and British Virgin Islands are in a state and the Franco-Dutch St Martin has suffered catastrophic damage too

This is hitting us pretty hard, getting the worse end tomorrow (I'm in southern GA). Got work called off with the business boarded up along with schools closed until Thursday. Nothing in comparison to the worst of it. Still scary we are getting a hurricane able to shut down a major city 2 hours inland.

It's down to a Cat 2 for GA yes?

Hope youse come through unscathed! Will you get much of a storm surge that far inland?

The Buzzjacker Bigwiglaf lives in Tampa. I hope he and his family are OK, he said they would be evacuating because of the storm surge so I am sure they will be.

Those parrots are very cute in that photo, I hope they survived the hurricane!

Warning has been issued for several Caribbean islands as Hurricane Maria is due to hit the area this evening local time. It currently stands as a category four storm and is following a similar path to Hurricane Irma.

Horrible news to see considering the devastation Irma has left behind

^Actually, this decade has been relatively quiet up until this year. Sandy & Matthew were the only absolutely destructive storms before this year, and maybe Irma's older sister (i.e. the name she was a replacement for) Irene. 1995-2005 inclusive was far worse with many years seeing multiple devastating storms (the pair of Luis & Marilyn, which hit Caribbean islands rather similarly to these current two in 95, Mitch, Isabel, Ivan, and the whole 2005 gang of Dennis/Katrina/Rita/Stan/Wilma).

I have been worried looking at Maria for a couple of days now, why can't they all be nice and harmless like the (surprisingly) benign Tropical Storm Lee that ended up behind it and weakening?

One thing that might make Maria less worse than Irma is that it's apparently a rather small storm (and it's not going to match Irma's intensity), but that will be small comfort to those it does hit.

Well, mostly scratch that, it's not quite as intense as Irma but it did reach Category 5 speeds and it's just ripped through Dominica. Awful stuff. I'm now seeing comparisons to David which is really not a good hurricane to be compared with.

Jose was harmless too, as despite it being Category 4 never really hit any sort of land.

Wouldn't exactly say that, it has (miraculously) remained a fish storm but it's been alive for ages and could still hit the eastern US yet. Not to mention the threat of it potentially coming in so soon after Irma disrupted the pickup operation because everyone had to be on high alert in CASE Jose swept in.
