Virtually the whole congregation was hit with 27 dead and 27 injured including the pastor's 14 year-old daughter, as gunman in full battle gear stormed the church and reloaded several times. He then fled in a car but is dead now after stand-off with FBI. Happened 11.30 am local time, 5.30pm UK time. Details still emerging. Locals say only around 50 regulars attended every Sunday.

There must be something mentally wrong with a guy who goes in to a church and shoots all the congregation with the intention of killing them all. Children are among the dead. Why not just top himself if he has issues or grievances or his life is so bad? No way is he sane. Always a man too. Can't think of a woman carrying out a mass murder in the US or anywhere else.

It's not clear yet whether he killed himself or was shot dead by pursuing FBI agents.

Unfortunately, that’s always the case with acts of terrorism, especially white terrorism which so many forms of media tend to overlook. The one thing that disgusts me is how normal this seems to be. This year the death toll has been so high due to mass shootings.

That's the same size as my church, so all I can think of is that it easily could've happened here. Devastating, as if previous shootings weren't unsettling enough :/ sad.gif

Piers Morgan on GMB calling the US Attorney General a moron for saying that if more people had taken their guns to church he'd have been killed after just a few shots. I think he's right and you can bet more people will be taking their guns in future.

He was "deranged" they say, so why the hell did he have a gun? Unless it was held illegally. No way anyone here would get a gun with any hint of mental problems or depression. He'd been discharged from the US forces too in 2014 for assaulting his wife and child.

There is no such rule in the US. Republican senators and congressmen backed by the NRA keep voting it down

Trumps reaction was a disgrace too - highlighting first he was mentally ill and then being thankful that another person had a gun or else it could have been worse!! Ermm maybe ban guns for all??

I wondered about that. Did someone in the congregation fire back at him then or did he mean the police or FBI agents from San Antonio who chased him?

According to CNN a local man heard the first shots, ran in to his house and grabbed his own rifle and engaged the gunman who then fled in his car.
He then waved down a passing truck and they pursued the gunman until the guy lost control and crashed.
Kept his gun pointed at the wreck until the FBI arrived and approached the vehicle and found the dead gunman and a further cache of weapons.

A morbid and quite sad fact that often is relayed at times like these: Gun sales surge immediately after each mass shooting.

The mindset in America is very different to here, I don't think any event (no matter how tragic/horrific) would change the publics mind there on this issue no matter how obvious a solution we feel it is. There are steps to improve gun licensing that could and should be introduced, but will likely fail because of the lobbying by the NRA and the well.. Republicans.

A truly horrible event yet again, one I feel like we are increasingly desensitised to. sad.gif
