What are your UK chart music predictions for 2018?
I think urban will remain dominant but I can see a revival of faster less watered dance music in the second half of the year as people get sick of the slow poppy dance music that dominated the dance music in the chart this year (with another UK deep/tech house revival most likely considering the recent success of 'More Than Friends' and 'Cola' - especially if Disclosure may be coming back with new music in 2018 - as progressive house doesn't show any signs of coming back any time soon to chart popularity, although I am hoping the success of Avicii- Without You ft Sandro Cavazza in many countries sparks a revival). In terms of pop, I assume Camila Cabello's follow up to Havana and Dua Lipa's follow up to New Rules will be big and the Latin pop trend will continue especially as we reach summer 2018. Latin will begin to fall off a cliff as people realise they don't understand reggaeton and have been listening to crap ones anyway and are not involved in the culture.
Pop Brat Justin Bibber will trend chase to diminishing returns. Natasha Bedingfield releases more buzz singles. Urban trap pop will rise. |

A not overly pop friendly rap song will reach the top of the charts. People here will say that it doesn't feel like a big #1 because they don't hear it on the radio or TV. Comments on the OCC website will cry foul that it's only reached #5 or something on the sales chart which they will still insist is the only chart that counts because it caters more to their taste because they're not a teenager anymore. The song will probably be a 6 or 7 out of 10 but people will call it one of the worst hits of the year because it has naughty swear words in it or mentions drugs or something.
And more B-list artists will have B-list songs hang around on the chart for at least twice their realistic shelf life because they're too bland for Spotify to bother removing from their playlists. A popstar will make a misfire by experimenting with a non-playlist friendly lead off single, and people will circlejerk in making fun of it for failing as they return to listening to Shape Of You for the 200th time. Mark these down as my 2019 predictions as well. |
