had to shoehorn the wonderful SOLDOUT into a topic with 'sold out' in the title

"Selling out" is a common idiomatic pejorative expression for the compromising of a person's integrity, morality, authenticity, or principles in exchange for personal gain, such as money."

Which artists/groups do you believe have sold out over the years? This topic came to me after Chez mentioned Ellie Goulding selling out in her singles rate. I quite agree, 'Burn' onwards marked a bit of a change for her that sounded far more blatantly commercial than what we were used to. She already had plenty of commercial success of course but her sound definitely appeared to be compromised and not as interesting, in my opinion, as it had once been. It paid off alright as 'Burn' spent multiple weeks at number 1.

Their current album, sure.

Rudimental also comes to mind.

I inspired a thread yay *.

Ellie Goulding is certainly the most blatant case in the last few years, Tiesto and Clean Bandit as well (not that it's always affected the quality of music in the latter's case).

Why are we saying Ellie Goulding sold out, is it because she started off as an 'indie pop' artist and then went 'pure pop' eventually?

not that it's necessarily a bad thing (though sometimes it is) but dance acts seem to do this all the time to try and get cheap radio and/or Spotify hits i.e. the likes of those listed below

Martin Garrix
Zedd
David Guetta
Afrojack
Steve Aoki
Marshmello
Alan Walker
Kygo
Alesso
Robin Schulz
Dillon Francis
Diplo

Calvin Harris.

Has been replaced with mountains of gold?" xx

Maroon 5 are a great shout as well. 1st album was amazing, 2nd was ok. Stuff like "Sugar" though? Awful.

Maybe Calvin a few years ago but he drastically changed his style for 2017 and not in a future bass/tropical sell out way.

(inb4 someone says Avicii, no I don't believe he has sold out)

Stan or not, you gotta agree Lonely Together is his most generic offering yet. Not that it affects his quality but still.

Ellie Goulding is always the one I think of. I do think you could say Taylor Swift in a way, moving away from her country roots to pure pop

Maroon 5 are the clear candidates here. Barely a shadow of the band they were before.

The Corrs for the In Blue era only.

Sugababes every time they switched a member.

Ellie Goulding is probably the worst example, the 'Lights' era and pre-deluxe 'Halcyon' were packed with fab songs but 'Burn' was a bit of a jump the shark moment - it was a decent enough song and she's had a couple of other good moments since then but she really didn't even need to go down the path of making such bland commercial radio type music, she had something at least vaguely unique to her before. </3

Did Galantis ever have a pre-'sellout' era? unsure.gif

Well, I would say up to and including 'Love On Me' was their pre-sellout era.

Most artists 'sell out' to a degree. Some great examples in here already, unfortunately in today's market you HAVE to sell out to get a big hit.

Ellie Goulding, Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Stormzy, Dizzee Rascal, Chipmunk.. tons of artists 'sell out'. You have to really to make any headway in the commercial market these days.
