"Sophomore slump" is often a phrase used when the second album of an artist underperforms compared to their first (see Emeli Sandť as a recent example) but I would like to focus on what you guys thought of the quality of a follow-up album from an artist that comes to mind, rather than solely the success.

Which artists have had an underwhelming second album for you after you really enjoyed the first?

I'll start off with the inspiration behind this thread - 5 Seconds of Summer! Their eponymous debut album turned out to be a guilty pleasure favourite of mine but the follow-up was so disappointing in comparison sad.gif I was pretty hyped for it because the lead single 'She's Kinda Hot' was fab but the whole album didn't really do it for me.

Emeli Sande and Sam Smith for me I know a lot of people don't like them on here but I adored both of the debuts but their second albums pale in comparison.

Lana Del Rey was one for a long time (ignoring 2010's Lana Del Ray album) but Ultraviolence seems to have finally clicked, albeit still not a patch on Born to Die.

Tove Lo springs to mind. 'True Disaster' (and 'Cool Girl' on a good day) is the one saving grace on Lady Wood.

Technically the 2nd and 3rd album, but the quality between Evanescence's Fallen and The Open Door dropped harder than Fat Boy and Little Man.

Some other lesser examples:
Flying Colors - Flying Colors -> Second Nature
The Glitch Mob - Drink the Sea -> Love Death Immortality
A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms -> The Thirteenth Step

And, a really minor one, but Ne Obliviscaris' Citadel has a 4.5 on my rym while their first album has a 5. That counts, right?

Not really a sophomore slump but I haven't enjoyed anything by Rihanna since she released 'Four Five Seconds' tbh. Some of it's been okay, but nothing like she used to be sad.gif.

Foxes is the instant one that came to mind! Loved her first album (even if it was with encouragement from a friend of mine who stanned hard) but All I Need is so weak in comparison. Body Talk is the only thing worth keeping from there and it wouldn't rank in my top half of Glorious.

I didn't think of it, because I still love it, but Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence was a definite step down from Born To Die imo.

Lana is a big one for me. I adore nearly every track on Born to Die (and thereís some amazing highlights on Paradise too). Iíve still yet to hear Ultraviolence in full, which is a shame considering how much I love BTD but everything Iíve heard from it aapart from West Coast is just dull and dreary! Same goes for what Iíve heard from Honeymoon.

She really pulled it back with Love and Lust for Life but I lost interest again with Coachella kink.gif I should maybe give LFL a go still!

I guess my best example is Duffy. I did like Endlessly but it couldnít compare to Rockferry.

Lady GaGa from Born This Way on slumped a LOT in comparison to The Fame - with ether cheesy Steps-lite tiny tunes like Broody Mary puke.gif or real pretentious pop.

Lana Del Rey as well - her albums became tuneless, gargling cures for insomnia.
