A very controversial topic I know - but since society seems to be moving in the direction of legalising activities formerly considered taboo, I wondered what your thoughts were on this?

Obviously the main issue is that of increased incidence of birth defects - but in that case, should relationships between first cousins also be illegal?

Small sample size, but pretty much as I expected.

Presumably the instinctive aversion overrides the well-understood biological risk then, otherwise the second poll might have produced a slightly different result. unsure.gif

Does anyone think it will ever be legalized, in the way that other sexual activities once considered forbidden, have been?

Personally, I doubt it.

I can't see it being legalised in my lifetime. The level of hostility is just too great for any government to consider it. The oddest thing about the law is that it applies to same sex relationships even though the main justification for the law doesn't apply. Of course, that could be said to reflect the taboo nature of incestuous relationships in general.

Not that same-sex incestuous relationships could be legalized on their own of course.

I suspect part of it is the possibility is the issue of coerced 'consent' which might be more of an issue than in usual relationships?

At the end of the day though, is it the place of the law to intervene in relationships that only affect consenting adults, whatever the nature of that relationship? Maybe that was one of the arguments used to legalize homosexuality? unsure.gif

At the time of the age of consent debate in the 1990s that was a line we were encouraged to use to try and persuade Tory MPs. I didn't really follow the debate in the 1960s.

Bump, re the Errol Musk case...

OK, technically this wasn't incest, but close enough to creep most people out!

No, it is wrong and I don't agree with it. Also, first cousin marriages are weird and shouldn't happen

No doubt this will be dismissed as just another 'racist' Mail article, but this seems the best thread to post it in...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-59...-marriages.html

The tragic truth about cousin marriages: They can cause a litany of genetic illnesses and they're a key factor in the deaths of two children a week in Britain, so why is it taboo to talk about them, asks SUE REID

The World Health Organisation insists that attempts to stop consanguineous marriage are ‘undesirable and inappropriate’
The stance of local councils in Britain, including multi-cultural Oldham in Lancashire, tallies with this view
In the former cotton mill town, 20 babies born each year have a consanguinity-related disorder, of whom 11 live with chronic disability
Yet the Health and Wellbeing Board overseen by Oldham council recently said cousin marriage is an ‘integral part of cultural and social life’

I think any relationship (and what comes with it) between any consensual adult couple should be legal. If, for example, a mother and son or daughter are in love with each other, who am I to say that they should not be together.

I do believe that it should be illegal for them to conceive together though, in this case adoption or a surrogate would be appropriate if they wanted a child together. They should use appropriate contraception, if the relationship is hetero, to reduce the risk of pregnancy and incestual complications.
