Ended up in a bit of a youtube 'related videos' rabbit hole this morning after reading an article in the Guardian on Steps and I came across this gem I'd not heard in a while! Made me think of other artists that had a stellar debut track that announced them with a bang. What do you think are the best debuts? It doesn't have to be all about music, debut performances by actors, of TV shows etc

I mean cmon. I'm such a 90's child but there's no denying this is fabulous! Cheesy, catchy and fun. The late 90's were just the best.

Talking of the late 90's, just over the other side of the millennium weren't half bad either! Anyone know if their iconiq tv show is kicking about online??

And of course, no topic about debuts would be complete without this:

laugh.gif I kid, I of course mean this: (tho Rashford's debut was lit af)

This is odd because the last couple of days I’ve been mainly listening to two debut albums: Dido-No Angel and Duffy-Rockferry. Both are flawless in my eyes and are bringing me back so many memories.

This is such a beautiful and emotive track.

This never saw the success it deserved but she more than made up for that with other songs and the album.

Everyone seems to forget the brilliance of Rihanna's debut Pon de Replay.

I am trying to think of a lot of my favourite artists but really their debut singles are far from their best for me. An example that did come into my head however is Girls Aloud - 'Sound of the Underground'! This was an extremely strong start to their career and launched them as an exciting, innovative new girl-group. Avril's 'Complicated' was a pretty good way for her to begin her career as well.

I agree with all of these tbh, especially Spice Girls, Avril, Britney, Bwitched and especially Girls Aloud.

I'd also add Vanessa Carlton - 1000 Miles, and also Christina Aguleira's best ever and debut song. As much as ai hate the talentless Cowell carbon copy pop band, 1D had a good debut too.

Actually Adele hasn’t publically said anything about Can’t Take Me Homd IIRC. M!ssundaztood, the second album, was when Adele went to see Pink at Brixton Academy and it was one of the most defining moments of her life.

Speaking of which CTMH is actually an example of quite a poor debut. It isn’t what Pink eventually became about and though it’s fairly decent, it was pretty much throwaway RnB like a lot of RnB at the time.

my apologies. i don't think it's been mentioned before on buzzjack so wasn't sure which album Adele claimed to have been so impressed by. i also believe she referred to having the sensation of being in a wind tunnel. if it wasn't for pink adele would probably never become the artist she is right now

speaking of pink's biggest fans... Adele's debit is quite stunning too. Hometown Glory is probably my favourite song of hers

Yes, apparently her voice just ‘hitting her’, incredible!

Anyway - this is my pick:

1000 Miles is fantastic, aside from that it really is one of the most distinctly American pop songs ever too.

You mention one boyband, which reminds me, one of the best debuts for any boyband ever for me is this song. The Wanted never came close to it after in terms of quality imo.
