Scotland is OUTRAGED over a change to the recipe of Irn Bru, the other national drink. A.G Barr has decided to cut the sugar in Irn Bru by 54% in response to the upcoming Sugar Tax by replacing it with sweeteners. The response has not been entirely positive...

Fun Fact! Scotland is one of the very very very small number of countries (others are Myanmar, Cuba and North Korea) where Coca Cola or a Coca Cola owned brand is not the best selling soft drink! Irn Bru kicks ass.

I personally have acquired a few cans ahead of the swap incase the new stuff is f***ing vile. I'm not too worried as Diet Bru is one of the few diet drinks I actually like.

Well people better get used to this sort of stuff in all sugar based products as it is happening across the market.

Yeah I think this will be the first in a long line of big high profile changes. Going to be interesting to see which ones are successful and if any actually backfire.

I'm...not sure that's the sort of company that Scotland would like to be in.

As I said in the News & Politics forum, it would be absolute cosmic hilarity if the one moment that pushes the Scottish to vote for independence is Irn Bru changing its recipe as a result of the "sugar tax".

This is classic Slurm.

Once people hate it, they remarket the classic deink and make a fortune even with the new tax

Of course it is, the science is there, it just the technology process which is lacking. We are going to be see big changes especially from British companies over the next 5 years for a variety of reasons including tax, but also social responsibility.

Personally for me I don't think the sugar levy is where the problem is, it is more on the rise of fast & processed foods, but that is probably for another discussion and definitely a lot harder to tackle than the sugar issue.

You do realise that that was a reference to the "New Coke" debacle of the 80s?

Didn't need a daily mash article. Go stand on a Scottish street and ask them what Irn Bru tastes like. The most common answer you'll get is "irn bru"! I've been drinking it for ever and I wouldn't even begin to know where to begin to describe it

I knew I'd seen it mentioned on Buzzjack somewhere, sorry!

Classic Scotland reacting like this :') Irn Bru have had to assure people that it's not gonna taste that much different but we'll see, i think there's still gonna be like 4 tea spoonfuls per can which is kinda ridiculous but nothing compares to irn bru laugh.gif

I'm worried, stupidly, that they have said "9 out of 10" think it tastes the same or better. Like what if I'm in the 10%?!

ikr, i feel like because I know its different I will automatically think it's worse, it's the same as the Irn Bru Xtra which just tastes like syrup

I've only had Xtra once, it's not sold in England, and I thought it was alright personally.

Ahhh. I think I need to stock up tbh. sad.gif Looove Irn Bru! But tbh, I doubt I'd be able to taste the difference. There is still a bit of outrage due to Cadbury's Creme Eggs changing and I genuinely couldn't taste the difference, where my other friends could 🙃

I miss the Irn Bru chew bars the most though cry.gif
