Joseph's Hit 250: Year-End 2017

Chart Commentary

While there is no change at the top of the chart, with Troye Sivan keeping #1 for a second week with My My My!, we see three brand new entries in the top 5. Kylie Minogue leads the way, as her comeback single Dancing debuts at #2. Dancing is actually her highest peaking track to date, outdoing the #4 peak of her first chart hit Timebomb in 2012. Dancing becomes her third top 10 hit - a surprisingly low title for someone I love as much as Kylie! Timebomb is also her biggest hit to date, spending an impressive 8 weeks in my top 10 and 13 weeks in my top 30 (#31-40 didn't exist in my chart back then). Her last lead single, Into the Blue, made it to #8, which feels disappointingly low looking back as it's a brilliant song, but its longevity ended up decent!

Kylie Minogue
2012 04 Timebomb | NAS | 5-7-8-8-9-4-8-9-11-12-15-19-25-X (13 weeks)
2013 12 Flower | 1 | 12-18-29-X (3 weeks)
2013 24 On A Night Like This (Abbey Road Sessions) | AT | 28-36-26-24-34-36-X (6 weeks)
2013 17 Skirt | NAS | 17-22-36-X (3 weeks)
2014 08 Into the Blue | 1 | 8-15-22-32-28-29-32-X-25-X (8 non-consecutive weeks)
2015 29 Right Here, Right Now (Giorgio Moroder feat. Kylie Minogue) | FEAT | 29-X (1 week)
2016 16 Every Day's Like Christmas | 3 | 16-20-X (2 weeks)
2018 02 Dancing | 1 | 2-... (1+ weeks)

The most random new entry of this week comes from Belgian DJ Felix De Laet, also known as Lost Frequencies. The backstory to this new entry actually comes from our very own Pete's EOY chart, where I listened to Janieck's Just Wanna Be With You out of curiosity. I enjoyed the song (it would've been just outside my top 40 this week) and it led me to check out more of his songs. I didn't make the link until then that Janieck was the vocalist on Lost Frequencies' flop follow-up to Are You With Me, which made #29 in the UK in 2015. I never heard Reality, mostly due to the chart show format at the time, but better late than never! It's Janieck's first hit and Lost Frequencies' second, hugely outdoing Are You With Me's #30 peak.

Lost Frequencies
2014 30 Are You With Me | 1 | 30-36-X (2 weeks)
2018 04 Reality (feat. Janieck Devy) | 2 | 4-... (1+ weeks)

Janieck
2018 04 Reality (Lost Frequencies feat. Janieck Devy) | FEAT | 4-... (1+ weeks)

Completing the hat-trick of new entries in my top 5 this week is Mabel, who scores her very first top 10 hit. Mabel's had three chart hits so far, two of which have been in conjunction with Not3s. Fine Line is one of those two songs, and it also gives Not3s his third chart hit and first top 10. They both collaborated on the #12 hit My Lover, which is still in this week's top 40. Mabel's introductory hit was slow-burner Finders Keepers, which peaked at #13, while Not3s first charted on Steel Banglez' Bad, an #18 hit.

Mabel
2017 13 Finders Keepers (feat. Kojo Funds) | 1 | 33-40-28-37-X-13-25-35-X (7 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 12 My Lover (Not3s & Mabel) | FEAT | 17-15-12-16-21-24-... (6+ weeks)
2018 05 Fine Line (Mabel & Not3s) | 2 | 5-... (1+ weeks)

Not3s
2017 18 Bad (Steel Banglez feat. Yungen, MoStack, Mr Eazi & Not3s) | FEAT | 18-21-31-X (3 weeks)
2017 12 My Lover (Not3s & Mabel) | 3 | 17-15-12-16-21-24-... (6+ weeks)
2018 05 Fine Line (Mabel & Not3s) | FEAT | 5-... (1+ weeks)

Alongside three new entries, this week's highest climber also shoots into the top 10. Up 30 places is Sick Boy, the surprise comeback single by The Chainsmokers. My opinion of The Chainsmokers is up and down. Sick Boy is their fourth top 10 hit, and all of their chart hits bar Roses have made my top 20, but the likes of Closer and Something Just Like This had short shelf lives and now I struggle to enjoy them thanks to overplay. Sick Boy outpeaks their last top 10 hit Paris, but trails #1 hit Erase from before they hit the big time, and #5 hit Don't Let Me Down.

The Chainsmokers
2013 01 Erase (feat. Priyanka Chopra) | NAS | 7-1-4-12-18-26-33-X (7 weeks)
2016 40 Roses (feat. ROZES) | 1 | 40-X (1 week)
2016 05 Don't Let Me Down (feat. Daya) | 1 | 8-16-20-16-5-10-15-21-30-X (9 weeks)
2016 20 Closer (feat. Halsey) | 2 | 20-24-31-X (3 weeks)
2016 19 All We Know (feat. Phoebe Ryan) | PS | 19-23-37-X (3 weeks)
2017 09 Paris | 1 | 9-13-28-X (3 weeks)
2017 20 Something Just Like This (The Chainsmokers & Coldplay) | 2 | 24-20-29-X (3 weeks)
2018 07 Sick Boy | 1 | 37-7-... (2+ weeks)

In the album chart, Shakira makes a belated new entry with her recent Spanish album El Dorado. Its late entry is fuelled by her tour announcement, and the fact that I nabbed tickets to see her live. I guess it makes sense to actually check out the album...!

Elsewhere in this week's singles chart, we see chart debuts from Maren Morris and Tom Gregory, alongside new a new peak for Sigrid.
