I thought of this thread idea a few months ago but totally forgot about it, until Dexton's one today about modern classics reminded me of it. But this is not restricted to modern songs. I am interested to know about any song. Which songs that have either sold a lot, have a praised status in society in general or are critically acclaimed do you not get the love for?

I'll go first. I do not really get the fuss about Toni Braxton's 90s hit 'Un-Break My Heart'. To me it is dull and just drones on, I don't really get much out of it and find it overrated - it is somewhat of a classic with its US #1 peak and UK #2 one, though. What about you all?

Call Me Maybe and Somebody That I Used to Know. I can see the appeal but neither is my thing at all. As you can imagine that summer was fun.

An older example would be Frankie Goes to Hollywood...neither Relax or Two Tribes are songs I get the appeal of particularly. Catchy ish is about as much as I can say about both. I'm sure there are loads more, will have a think...

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot Uptown Funk! And Fleur East Sax would be another one

Well, Mr. Brightside is my biggest bugbear of all. Like, just piss off seriously.

Then I would say Uptown Funk of modern big songs, the pinnacle of annoying.

Ah I'd forgotten all about Ho Hey. Absolutely detested that at the time but don't think I've heard it (luckily) for over 3 years. Same with Passenger's Let Her Go.

Off topic a bit, but Two Tribes I prefer to Relax (although I like both), it sounds big and has a lot of energy in it for the time I think! The beat sounds ahead of its time too, quite dancey sounding!

Anyway, in terms of big songs I find overrated or dislike:

Martin Garrix ft Bebe Rexha - In The Name Of Love - boring drop in this song with screechy vocal imo from Bebe in places especially the bit starting 'I wanna testify'.

Clean Bandit ft Julia Michaels - I Miss You - very generic song with over cutesy sounding imo drop with pitched vocals

Some older examples:

Kim Wilde - Kids In America
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

I don't dislike them as such but they are overrated I think. Both rather immature sounding songs and both artists had a lot better songs imo.

THIS! All the other 2009 singles from her were much better imo!

I will add another song I find overrated and dislike

Jessie J ft BoB - Price Tag

Big disappointment for both artists tbh, after the superior Do It Like A Dude for Jessie J and Magic and Airplanes from BoB.

I don’t think it’s possible to overrate Jessie J though. I thought the universe had unanimously decided she was shit.

'Do It Like A Dude' is Jessie J's peak for me as well, I did used to like 'Price Tag' too but got sick of it due to overplay and it never quite recovered. 'Wild' and 'Domino' are both good (the latter was a #1 in my personal chart back in the day *_* #secretstan) so I was glad when they both did well. However, my feelings on how awful 'It's My Party' is are well documented enough so THAT one is definitely suitable for me as a response to the thread title, will never get how such unpleasant vox got to #3.

Do It Like a Dude was great! Then she comes out with Price Tag and next thing you know she's coming out as a fake bisexual and doing singing contests in China... says it all

I think most of Gaga's big hits have held up pretty well but 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face' really haven't, I liked them at the time but they both just sound so dated now. A shame I never seem to hear 'Paparazzi' anywhere any more as that was clearly the best single from The Fame original ;o

There are a ton of these for me because I'm an annoying contrarian sometimes, even with songs that I'm 'supposed' to like such as M83's 'Midnight City' which I've always thought is just ok. But the first one that comes to mind here really is Wheatus' 'Teenage Dirtbag' which is absolute whiney unlistenable garbage and yet so many people with similar taste to me seem to love it.

Of big 00s classics, I absolutely can't stand:

Outlast - Hey Ya (complete and utter racket)
Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love (whiny preachy pile of w***)

From huge recent this that might soon be seen as classics, Uptown Funk is just noise and Despacito is utter shite and I can't fathom how it's so popular.

Why do people lose their shit to that 'Country Roads' song?

Oh and I could name 20 Oasis songs on the spot that I prefer to 'Wonderwall'.
