Inspired by two recent Pop forum rates (Steps, Justin Timberlake: one of which I hosted myself kink.gif), I realised that certain hits from back in the day often age AWFULLY and sound atrocious despite not being bad years & years ago. Two big examples I think are Steps - Thank ABBA For The Music and 50 Cent - Ayo Technology...

What other songs do you think have aged badly? Do you think some songs have somehow aged well, despite not expecting them to do so when they were released? Please share laugh.gif I’m in the mood to hear some terrible songs

As I discovered from the Now! plug.dj sessions, Taio Cruz's 'Come On Girl' sounds pretty much garbage now which I could swear it didn't at the time.

I think all of the songs shared still sound wonderful, I don't have a problem with them! Don't forget Ayo Technology was released 11 years ago so it isn't exactly a fresh tune, it still sounds amazing though!

I'd say every single from that era EXCEPT this one tbh tongue.gif this is such a unique and unusual song (at least amongst gigantic hit singles) that I don't think I'd ever get bored of it.

Agree re:Boom Boom Pow tongue.gif Hasn’t aged a bit for me, although my car doesn’t enjoy the insane bass too much laugh.gif

Anything Taio Cruz has aged badly tbh tongue.gif Although the Kylie/Travie version of Higher is still a bop

I don't think the Abba cover has aged badly either. Abba's tracks have such a timeless feel to them.

This and basically every track from that 'dubstep drop' era have aged hideously

Vocally it's still largely fine but the backing track and drop are so 'of the era' they just age it so much.

I worship the ground this woman walks on, but my god the production on this has not aged well. Most of Real Girl has not aged gracefully. It's a shame because her vocals are timeless perfection and much of her Sugababes material still sounds more current than her solo album. Ghosts, Siobhan's second solo album, still sounds ahead of it's time. A true masterpiece.

Sorry to say this because I'm a big fan, but some older Gaga...Just Dance, LoveGame, and a fair few of The Fame's album tracks were bang on trend for 08/09 and it shows now.

thing about ageing pop music is it goes through phases, first it sounds dated, then it becomes period-charming, then it gets a revival through movies laugh.gif

My case for the defence:

Sounded great when it came out (topped my charts age 10 when I first started doing that), then in the disco/punk era it sounded horribly dated and all-but-forgotten, then it got picked up for a big movie and became a monster party oldie in the 90's. Not sure how well-known it is in the 21st century, but I would guess it's still fairly well-known despite sounding its 50-years old?

As with anything trying to be futuristic at the time, I think it "Boom Boom Pow" is really dated now. That's me though! We're just continuing the trend of nobody agreeing with me on BuzzJack this weekend laugh.gif

All the Timbaland, Guetta, RedOne and Dr Luke stuff sounds very of it's time now. Not in a bad way for the most part but the sound has certainly aged.

Oh and Usher's Love In This Club, production is laughably dated now.

Iyaz - Replay is the one that instantly springs to mind, hard to believe that is actually from this decade (albeit only just).

This one sounds horrendously dated imo for 1991, never mind now! OMD what were you thinking? They had such great ahead of their time tracks early in their career and then they came up with this dated song ohmy.gif

Lady Gaga + The Black Eyed Peas' stuff from 2009 sounds very of the time I'd agree, kinda weird as they were SO BIG at the time, but time's not been so kind to them. Timbaland's another one definitely.

Other songs that were VERY BIG at the time, but don't seem so now from the 2010s:

Owl City - Fireflies
B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams - Airplanes
Taio Cruz - Dynamite (+ everything else by him really)
3OH!3 - Starstrukk
LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem
Jessie J - Price Tag
Jennifer Lopez - On The Floor
Alexandra Stan - Mr Saxobeat
Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know
Fun. - We Are Young
Nicki Minaj - Starships
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines

Most stuff by David Guetta, will.i.am, DJ Fresh, Cheryl Cole/Payne/whatever & Flo Rida as well. Majority 2010/2011, looking at the EOYs for those years, there's a hell of a lot of throwaway pop.

We Are Young is a great shout, I can't believe how it was absolutely everywhere back in 2012 but nowadays people I know generally can't even recall how it goes...

This might be a bit controversial:

Slight rip-off of Amy Winehouse there.

As for 'Love In This Club', I would still play background when getting busy.

Looking back now, this sounds crap.

Was this song that introduced us to 'sexting'?

This ironically used on X Factor.

Any EDM-pop yes does sound dated because we have entered an era of predominantly (apart from the first two Taylor Swift singles from Reputation which will probably sound dated soon when we look back at them laugh.gif ) more sensible minimal pop.

The prospect of hearing Black Eyed Peas bashing out at full volume is a very good reason to steer clear of clubs laugh.gif
