Believe it or not, Q1 of 2018 is pretty much DONE already. Crazy how time flies. As we usually do at this time of the year, what have been your favourite musical moments of 2018? Favourite songs, albums, gigs, performances, etc? What are you anticipating from the rest of 2018?

I think 2017 got off to a better start, but 2018 has had some really solid songs so far. A selection of my favourites (alphabetically):

5 Seconds of Summer - Want You Back
Benjamin Ingrosso - Dance You Off
Delta Goodrem - Think About You
FELIX SANDMAN - EVERY SINGLE DAY
Liam Payne & Rita Ora - For You
Louisa feat. 2 Chainz - YES
Marshmello & Anne-Marie - FRIENDS
Shawn Mendes - In My Blood
Troye Sivan - My My My!
Ulrik Munther - Before
Why Don't We - Trust Fund Baby
Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey - The Middle

In terms of albums, Q1 has been utterly DIRE - I've played three brand new releases all year so far, and two of them have been in the past week laugh.gif I'm sure it's not normally *this* dry in Q1! So my favourites, kinda by default but to their credit, they are solid albums:

Camila Cabello - Camila (definitely my favourite!!)
George Ezra - Staying At Tamara's
Kate Nash - Yesterday Was Forever

On the bright side, there are loads of new releases coming soon. Kylie, CNCO, Cardi B, Isaac Gracie, Saara Aalto and especially Anne-Marie have all perked my interest over the next month alone, and I still need to check out Hayley Kiyoko and Kacey Musgraves from Friday's releases.

I've been to three gigs so far this year - Paloma Faith, O.D.L. and Anne-Marie, and all have been fantastic, and each put on a pretty different show and experience too. I've got 12 (!) more booked for the rest of the year, including Declan McKenna and Harry Styles over the Easter hols wub.gif

This year is kinda depressing for music, my favourite album releases so far are Fickle Friends - You Are Someone Else, Hayley Kiyoko - Expectations, Tonight Alive - Underworld and Fall Out Boy- M A N I A (in that order). The prior two are definite 10s and could be my albums of the year, I'd give the latter two an 8/10 as they're still good but a tad disappointing. Idek what's still to come this year that I'm looking forward to. I don't have any gigs lined up other than Demi in June, although Paramore in January was the highlight of my LIFE so far drama.gif heart.gif

Well you're missing out T Boy - there have been some incredibly good indie/pop albums already released so far in 2018.

My highlights would be MGMT, Young Fathers and Superorganism.

Well both Zedd/Bruno/The Weeknd released new stuff and I only expressed disdain over two songs so far so it’s already looking good. The US charts are letting me down so hard though... I’m kinda over these extreme runs.

Big ups to:
Breathe Carolina & Dropgun f/Kaleena Zanders - Rhythm Is A Dancer
Bruno Mars f/Cardi B - Finesse (Remix)
BTS f/Desiigner - Mic Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)
G-Eazy & Halsey - Him & I
G-Eazy f/A$AP Rocky & Cardi B - No Limit
Imagine Dragons - Whatever It Takes
Jax Jones f/Ina Wroldsen - Breathe
The Weeknd f/Kendrick Lamar - Pray For Me
Why Don’t We - These Girls
Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey - The Middle

not all of them are 2018 fully but still

Also these albums:
Camila Cabello - Camila
Fall Out Boy - M A N I A
G-Eazy - The Beautiful & Damned
Justin Timberlake - Man Of The Woods
Logic - Bobby Tarantino II
the Black Panther soundtrack

+ Gromee & Hayley Kiyoko released new albums, I think Gromee’s might end up being my album of the year

Album of the year is without doubt one released just this week - Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves wub.gif Absolutely stunning, a mix of influences but still true to her country roots with some of the best lyrics in AGES, her writing is just masterful. It hasn't been a great year for albums thus far but Francesca Michielin - 2640 is another great one that really stepped up her sound and Camila Cabello delivered an excellent debut.

I've got Dua Lipa this month which is fab and Lady Gaga in January was easily the best concertI've ever gone to wub.gif

Singles wise highlights of the year are, off the top of my head:

Annalisa - Il mondo prima di te
Asmik Shiroyan - You & I
Camila Cabello - Never Be The Same
Dua Lipa - IDGAF
Hailee Steinfeld - Capital Letters
Isabell Otrebus - Delirium
Jessica Mauboy - We Got Love
Kacey Musgraves - Slow Burn
Keala Settle - This Is Me
Louisa - Yes
Mariette - For You
Netta - Toy
Samir & Viktor - Shuffla
Shawn Mendes - In My Blood

Compared to 2017 Q1 this year has been a bit crap tbh. Theres been loads of good stuff but I feel like last year was much better

Standout singles from this year so far for me;
George Ezra - Paradise wub.gif (possibly fighting for SOTY for me, who knew i was such a george ezra stan)
Justin Timberlake - Filthy dance.gif (i played this on repeat for all of january & february, although to be fair it's un-growing? on me a bit...)
Paramore - Fake Happy heart.gif (a certified bop, so good that it actually got me back into their album. Rose-Colored Boy will probs be top 5 for Q2 as well)
Imagine Dragons - Whatever It Takes (a 2017 song but definitely got a new lease of life this year for me)
Dua Lipa - IDGAF (same as above)

In terms of new albums I haven't really been too adventurous but what I have got into are all amazing in their own ways;
Justin Timberlake - Man Of The Woods (although FS/LS is significantly better)
George Ezra - Staying At Tamara's
Camila Cabello - Camila
Vance Joy - Nation of Two (lay it on me 11/10)
also sort of Eminem, Taylor Swift, & The Killers' latest albums although they're 2017

Overall Q1 is very much George Ezra vs Justin Timberlake in every way laugh.gif I have a feeling George will pull out in front of JT by the end of the year though, but who knows what releases will come later in the year! Panic at the Disco, Jon Bellion & Gorillaz all supposedly have albums coming later on in the year so i am HYPED cheer.gif

No songs have totally blown me away, and since my EOY #1 has been a song from January in the last two years I'm slightly worried, although Owl City's Lucid Dream is pretty good. I've already found two albums better than my EOY #1 last year (Vance Joy & The Fratellis).

It's weird, I've only listened to one 2018 album so far, according to my MS Word list at least... That album is Moby's Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt, which I listened to once on Spotify and it was really good actually (has a dark-ish trip-hop vibe iirc), although I wasn't paying the best of attentions. lol. 'Like a Motherless Child' is a really good song.

Generally I find it much more difficult to get excited by new music these days, with less time on my hands and less interest in what's popular currently (I mean I haven't even listened to Melodrama for example, which everyone seems to have been buzzing about). I have to make an actual effort to dig deeper into less well-known stuff then.

I think Grimes has a new album out at some point this year? If so, then I'm looking forward to that one.

I'm actually really excited about music currently, aside from the #1 singles it's been a solid year so far! I'm keeping up with new releases more than I have in a long time, thanks in part to finding a new radio station to listen to that plays it all. I haven't listened to any full albums yet, but I suspect Kacey Musgraves' will be the first one in the near future.

Fave songs so far would include 'Fine Line', 'All The Stars', 'No Excuses', 'Psycho' and 'This Is Me', plus 'Meant To Be' and 'Whatever It Takes' as carry-overs from last year.

I have not listened to a single album that has been released this year yet drama.gif it has been really dry so far as others have touched upon. There are still quite a lot of records from last year that I need to get round to anyway. Looking at the release schedule, I am somewhat interested in upcoming albums from: Cardi B, Confidence Man, Plan B, SOFI TUKKER and Zola Jesus.

Off the top of my head / with help from this thread, I have been enjoying the following songs quite a lot in the past few months:

5 Seconds Of Summer - Want You Back
Bazzi - Mine
Bruno Mars feat. Cardi B - Finesse (Remix)
Cardi B feat. 21 Savage - Bartier Cardi
The Chainsmokers - Sick Boy
G-Eazy feat. A$AP Rocky & Cardi B - No Limit
George Ezra - Paradise
Jax Jones feat. Ina Wroldsen - Breathe
Kendrick Lamar feat. SZA - All The Stars
Liam Payne & Rita Ora - For You
Lily Allen feat. Giggs - Trigger Bang
Mabel feat. Not3s - Fine Line
Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still
Sean Paul feat. David Guetta & Becky G - Mad Love
Steel Banglez feat. Yungen & Mostack - Bad
Taylor Swift - Delicate
Troye Sivan - My My My!
Years & Years - Sanctify

It is a shame that Post Malone's 'Psycho' hasn't quite made my list as I was really enjoying his output last year but this one hasn't quite wowed me yet. sad.gif

My ultimate musical moment of the year so far was seeing Kendrick Lamar (with support from James Blake) live, he was insanely talented. wub.gif

As for movies, I have only seen 'The Post' and 'I, Tonya' so far and the latter was my favourite of the two! I would definitely recommend it due to the interesting scandalous true-life element and impressive acting performances.

I think it's been a grand year for albums so far.

Justin Timberlake - Man of the Woods
Geogre Ezra - Staying at Tamara's
The Dark Element - The Dark Element (this is easily AOTY material, I can only see Kylie topping this)
Toni Braxton - Sex & Cigarettes

In terms of what's to come I am mucho excited for Kylie Minogue - Golden, My Indigo - My Indigo, Matt Cardle - Time to be Alive and Andy Brown - Cedermont

Songs that have slayed me

Andy Brown - Talk of the Town
Kylie Minogue - Dancing, Stop me from Falling, Raining Glitter
Matt Cardle - Desire, Time To Be Alive
Shawn Mendes - In My Blood

My favourite new song of 2018 so far is probably BlocBoy JB & Drake's 'Look Alive' (BuzzJack fave I know), really I've been even more shit at keeping up with music than ever though (aside from BJSC of course, which has been my main source of new / new-to-me music for quite a while now) and I kinda struggle to even remember what other recent mainstream songs I've stanned much. Flicking through each week's top 40 new entries on the OCC website these ones would also be amongst my fave of this year's hits:

Bruno Mars - Finesse (feat. Cardi B)
Drake - God's Plan
George Ezra - Paradise
Justin Timberlake - Say Something (feat. Chris Stapleton)
Kendrick Lamar and SZA - All The Stars
Liam Payne and Rita Ora - For You
Shawn Mendes - In My Blood (based on 2 listens lmao)
The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar - Pray For Me
Years & Years - Sanctify

Really feels like an overwhelmingly mediocre year, even a couple of that list are songs I'd probably only rate 8/10 or so. I imagine I'm forgetting some other great new songs of the year though which just didn't make the top 40.

I think it's been a relatively good year so far, here are my pickings (based on them either being released in 2018, or reaching their chart peak then)

Alice Merton - No Roots
Bazzi - Mine
Camila Cabello - She Loves Control
David Guetta + Sia - Flames
Demi Lovato - Tell Me You Love Me
Dua Lipa - IDGAF
Duke Dumont - Inhale
Janelle Monaé - Make Me Feel wub.gif
Jax Jones feat. Ina Wroldsen - Breathe
Kylie Minogue - Dancing wub.gif
Louisa - Yes
Mabel + Not 3 S - Fine Line
MGMT - When You Die
MNEK - Tongue
One Bit feat. Noah Cyrus - My Way
P!nk - Beautiful Trauma
Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still
Sigrid - Strangers
Troye Sivan - My My My!
Virtual Self - Ghost Voices

And of course anything by Gente de Zona.

Some absolute dross around though.
