Chart Commentary

After a brilliant week last week, CNCO soar to new heights as their self-titled second album dominates across the board. Of course, it spends a second week atop the album chart, but most notable is its impact in the singles chart. CNCO become the first artist to lock the top two out since Ed Sheeran in January 2017, when Shape of You climbed 38-1 and Castle on the Hill joined it, going 40-2 in their first full week of availability. Slo Yo leads the pack as their current single, and it jumps one spot to become their first ever #1 single. Mi Medicina continues its long slog up the chart, debuting at #36 as an instant grat track six weeks ago and finally making it to #2.

They also match a record for the most top 10 hits in a sole week, with four. They tie with Girls Aloud, who achieved this all the way back in November 2012, when all four new songs from their Ten greatest hits album featured in my top 10! Completing CNCO's batch are two climbers - lead single Hey DJ shoots up 21-4 (now with added Yandel credit as this is the version I've been playing more as opposed to the solo edit I previously enjoyed - it's his first hit) and album track Se Vuelve Loca is up 13-6.

All of their other songs see upward traction too. The other two singles from the album are on the climb: Mamita climbs 26-19, and Reggaetn Lento (with Little Mix) rebounds 28-23. Finally, they have new entries at #12 with Mala Actitud and #39 with Fiesta en Mi Casa. An incredible achievement!

The highest new entry this week is one not fuelled by its main artist, but actually by its featured vocalist. SJUR is a Norwegian DJ, who makes his chart debut with Rich & Famous this week, but its success is mainly down to Isac Elliot. The Finnish popstar has been racking up hits for five years now, when New Way Home debuted at #4 (peaking at #3 two weeks later). Rich & Famous is his ninth top 10 hit, and despite his consistent run of hits, Isac only achieved his first #1 in the first week of this year, with Mouth to Mouth inching its way up to the top.

Another chart veteran, Carrie Underwood made her first chart appearance a year before Isac. The country megastar first charted with her #4 hit Good Girl, the lead single from fourth album Blown Away. The title track then made it all the way to #1 later that year, and in total, she's notched up eight top 10s. After a couple of years away, Carrie returns with Cry Pretty, the lead single from her sixth album of the same name. It becomes her ninth top 10, debuting at #7.

The final of this week's new entries to the top 10 comes from the Love, Simon soundtrack (which is up one spot to #3 in my album chart this week). Three songs from the soundtrack are charting right now - Troye Sivan's Strawberries & Cigarettes rebounds one place to #16 after a peak of #9, while Bleachers' first hit Alfie's Song (Not So Typical Love Song) is this week's highest climber, up a huge 24 places to #13 (and it's worth noting that Khalid & Normani's Love Lies peaked at #22 but doesn't feature this week). Leading the pack though are Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff and Danish singer M with their track Never Fall in Love. Amongst many incredible moments in the film, I noticed the track playing in the background at one point and instantly liked it. Jack Antonoff achieves his first hit as a soloist (and his highest overall), while M returns to the top 10 for the first time in over a year, to notch up her seventh top 10.

On Thursday 12th April, I saw my idol live for the second time. I saw Harry Styles before in 2015, as part of One Direction's On the Road Again tour. It's strange looking back, thinking about how long it took me to go and see them, but I'm glad I finally did before their hiatus. It hasn't taken me as long to see him live solo though, and it was a breathtaking experience from start to finish. Harry sang the entirety of his self-titled solo album, as well as a couple of new songs, his own version of Just a Little Bit of Your Heart by Ariana Grande (which he co-wrote), his cover of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain, and a few 1D classics of course. His incredible debut single Sign of the Times was a particular favourite moment, unsurprisingly as it was my favourite song of 2017, and it re-enters my chart at #29 this week. The album bounces back up to #5 in the album chart! He was supported by Mabel, and although she doesn't feature in this week's top 40, I thoroughly enjoyed her set. I'm only particularly familiar with her hits, but I enjoyed the songs I didn't know too, both older tracks and unreleased newbies!
